The role of a Phlebotomist involves assisting in various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This position is crucial in performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and ensuring the proper decontamination and updating of patient information.
Responsibilities
+ Perform blood draws and explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections, such as urine or fecal, in a clear and courteous manner.
+ Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
+ Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
+ Understand and follow all physicians' orders.
+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.
+ Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.
+ Package specimens for transport, ensuring correct temperature and integrity of the specimen are maintained.
+ Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
+ Attend annual department training sessions.
+ Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
+ Proficiency in blood drawing, phlebotomy, and venipuncture.
+ At least 2 years of experience in a related role.
+ Customer service oriented.
+ Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
+ High School Diploma or GED.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ 2-4 years of professional experience in a related field.
Work Environment
The work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 7 AM to 4 PM, in a Patient Service Center (PSC) setting. The environment is structured to support efficient specimen collection and processing.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mitchellville, Maryland.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
