Job Description
The primary role of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various duties, troubleshooting, training, and providing workflow recommendations. The position involves executing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, and updating patient information.
ResponsibilitiesCollect and store specimens according to established procedures.Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection clearly and courteously.Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.Understand and execute physicians' orders accurately.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.Check test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy.Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature to maintain integrity.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.Attend annual department trainings.Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results to inquiries.Essential SkillsProficiency in venipuncture and phlebotomy.Excellent customer service skills.Experience working in a hospital environment with a wide range of patients, including pediatric and geriatric.Ability to handle 40+ patient draws per day in a fast-paced environment.At least 1 year of recent phlebotomy experience.Additional Skills & QualificationsPhlebotomy certification.High School Diploma or GED.Experience in a fast-paced lab setting is a must.Work Environment
This position is based at Thomas Hospital's Phlebotomy/Lab department, an extremely busy hospital with long hallways requiring significant standing and walking. The work schedule includes Monday through Friday and every other weekend, with an 8-hour shift from 6:30 AM to 3 PM. The hospital has 200 beds, and responsibilities include handling blood cultures and lactic acids, with some assistance from nurses for draws. Expect to perform 40-60 draws per day. The first week involves orientation and system training, followed by hands-on training with a trainer in the second week. Note that no vacation or time off requests are allowed during the contract period.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $18.50/hr.
