JOB SUMMARY

According to established policies and procedures, obtains blood and other specimens for laboratory testing according to physicians’ orders. Obtains needed supplies, verifies patient identification, prepares skin site and performs venipunctures according to established aseptic techniques. Labels specimens and transport it to Laboratory for analysis.

JOB DUTIES

Travels to patient care units as necessary.

Verifies patient identification and explains blood drawing procedure to patients in order to allay fears and elicit cooperation.

Performs venipuncture and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques to obtain blood specimens in accordance with physicians’ orders.

Travel to outreach client facilities for specimen collection and transport as assigned.

Completes initial training in required timeframe and has demonstrated competency on all phlebotomy assignments and locations.

Transports specimens in a timely manner.

Knowledgeable on order of draw, tube requirements, transport and storage conditions.

Answers telephone promptly, within 3 rings, and handles all client interactions with curtesy and efficiency.

Provides appropriate results and delivers accurate messages regarding specimen collection and processing.

Communicating with physician office staff to obtain diagnosis codes for the testing ordered if it is missing.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Post high school education through accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.

Licensure: PBT (ASCP) certification or equivalent preferred.  

Experience: Experience desirable but willing to train.
