Are you passionate about making a difference in patient care? UPMC Northwest is currently seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Full-Time Phlebotomist to join our dynamic healthcare team. In this essential role, you will be responsible for accurately collecting blood specimens and other laboratory samples from both inpatients and outpatients, which are critical to the diagnosis and treatment of our patients.

This position offers a varied schedule, including shifts from 4:30 am to 1:00 pm, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, 10:30 am to 7:00 pm, and 12:30 pm to 9:00 pm, providing flexibility while supporting our team. You will also work every other weekend and two holidays per year, ensuring we maintain a high standard of care for our community. While previous phlebotomy or Medical Assistant training is preferred, it is not required – we welcome all candidates who are eager to learn and grow within a supportive environment.

Responsibilities:

Interact courteously and professionally with laboratory customers and respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner. Follow proper patient identification procedures and procure blood specimens using venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick. Instruct patients on specimen collection procedures and collect samples beyond blood when necessary. Demonstrate dependability and independent judgment to prioritize department needs and accept appropriate authority. Perform specimen collection at off-site locations and transport specimens to the laboratory following safety procedures. Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, quality control, safety, compliance, and personnel policies. Perform clerical duties and utilize computer functions to enter patient data, manage test orders, and verify sample identity. Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as assigned. Inform technical staff, supervisors, and pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents. Perform arterial punctures following strict collection and post-collection guidelines. Monitor and maintain supplies, using materials and reagents cost-effectively.
