The Phlebotomist is responsible for the accurate and safe collection of blood and other specimens from both inpatients and outpatients, supporting essential diagnostic and treatment procedures. Working under the supervision of Medical Technologists, this role also includes clerical, computer, and courier duties that contribute to smooth laboratory operations. The position follows a full-time schedule of 40 hours per week, with a standard shift from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, including rotating weekends and holidays.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Patient Interaction & Communication
+ Greet and assist patients and visitors professionally and courteously.
+ Respond promptly and effectively to telephone inquiries.
+ Specimen Collection
+ Perform venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick procedures following proper patient identification protocols.
+ Instruct patients on self-collection procedures for non-blood specimens when necessary.
+ May perform arterial punctures in accordance with strict guidelines.
+ Operational Support
+ Transport specimens from on-site and off-site locations to the appropriate lab sections, adhering to safety protocols.
+ Maintain supply inventory and ensure cost-effective use of materials and reagents.
+ Compliance & Quality Assurance
+ Follow all hospital and laboratory policies related to procedures, safety (including hand hygiene and isolation precautions), quality control, and regulatory compliance.
+ Administrative Duties
+ Accurately enter patient demographics and test orders into the laboratory information system.
+ Manage test-related tasks such as receiving, canceling, charging, and crediting, ensuring sample and data integrity.
+ Team Collaboration & Training
+ Assist in training and orienting new staff, students, and residents as assigned.
+ Communicate unusual or problematic incidents to technical staff, supervisors, or pathologists.
+ Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
+ Training: Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program preferred.
+ Experience: Minimum 6 months of phlebotomy experience preferred.
+ Skills: Knowledge of medical terminology and experience with laboratory information systems preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
+ Phlebotomy Technician Certification (e.g., PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent preferred.
+ Act 31 - Child Abuse Reporting
+ Act 33 - Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance
+ Act 34 - Pennsylvania Criminal Background Check
+ Act 73 - FBI Fingerprint Clearance
