Job Overview: 

We are seeking a detail-oriented, compassionate, and skilled Phlebotomist to join our healthcare team. The Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing venipuncture and capillary blood collection procedures, accurately ordering laboratory tests, and receiving and processing specimens. This role is essential to ensuring timely and accurate diagnostic testing, patient comfort, and adherence to safety and compliance standards. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, precision in specimen handling, and a commitment to patient care.

Qualifications:

Required:

HS Diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program or certification courseCurrent certification as a Phlebotomy Technician -e.g., CPT from NHA, PBT from ASCP, or equivalentAt least one year of phlebotomy in a clinical, hospital, or laboratory settingBasic Life Support certificationExperience with EHR and LIS 

Scheduling Requirements:

Shift working, 7am-3:30pmIncluding standard phlebotomy rotation schedule of weekendsFull-Time (FT)

Essential Functions:

Ensure two points of identification such as full name and medical record number or date of birth before collecting specimensActively engage in patient identification procedures by asking the patient to verify their full nameReinforce that accurate patient identification is the most critical aspect of blood collectionVerify that specimen labels include five required pieces of information, including full name, medical record number, date, time, and collector s initialsEnsure labeling occurs in the presence of the patient for accuracyInvestigate and correct any mislabeling incidents immediatelyUtilize appropriate collection devices for each patientFollow the correct Order of Draw to specimen integrityDemonstrate a strong understanding of tube requirements for different testsReduce hemolysis and clotting risks through proper collection techniquesEnsure prompt responses to collection requests and provide efficient capillary collection proceduresIssue correct fluid and urine containers with proper labelingEnsure effective handwashing techniques are practiced regularlyConfirm staff adhere to proper glove disposal and sharps handling proceduresMaintain knowledge of Standard Precautions and train staff accordinglyParticipate in in-services addressing infection rate variance such as blood culturesAnswer calls within three rings, providing a professional greeting and department locationMaintain a courteous and professional demeanor at all timesAvoid excessive call transfers, ensuring inquiries are directed appropriatelyPromptly return calls to clientsAssist in scheduling special tests such as glucose tolerance testsActively contribute as a team player, demonstrating cooperation and flexibility in the workplaceProvide break and meal coverage for staff when neededMaintain punctuality to ensure smooth shift transitionsWork additional hours when necessary to support adequate staffing levelsAssist with weekend and management coverage when requiredEnsure that staff follow Standard Precautions and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen protocolsDispose of biohazardous and non-biohazardous waste properlyClean spills immediately in accordance with Chemical Hygiene Plan and MSDS instructionsUse appropriate protective equipment, including gloves, masks, eyewear, and lab coatsComplete annual safety training on fire hazards, electrical safety, universal precautions, and chemical handlingMaintain good working relationships with fellow employees and hospital personnelAnswer telephone calls politely and professionallyDisplay a helpful and hospitable attitude toward colleagues and patientsCoordinate and oversee the distribution of patient reports to appropriate doctors and facilitiesEnsure cover sheets are inserted correctly before mailing reportsGenerate and fax reports upon requestFollow up to confirm successful transmissionsScan and organize reports, requisitions, and billing requests as necessaryComplete a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually through seminars, professional journals, online training, and in-house meetingsParticipate in self-tutoring programs and engage with new research in phlebotomy techniques
