GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The staff pharmacist provides pharmaceutical care in an inpatient behavioral health setting at the Wyoming State Hospital. Compounds and dispenses medications following regulations and organizational policy. Serves as a resource to other healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, pharmacy students, medical and psychiatric providers, and nurses. Consults with nursing, medical staff, and patients about medications, orders, drug details, patient reactions, and errors. May supervise pharmacy technicians and organize daily workflow.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.
+ Assists with program coordination and tasks related to the maintenance and expansion of program services for state-funded pharmacy programs.
+ Assists with the work performed by the Wyoming State Department of Health, Office of Pharmacy Services, to assure appropriate and optimum use of the department's resources through clinical knowledge and background.
+ Supports effective communication and maintains the highest standards of personal, professional, and ethical conduct to support the State's goals.
+ Provides consultant support and is liaison to other departments and Statewide programs needing pharmacy expertise.
+ Provides support and assistance to the Pharmacy Program Manager in working with legislators to create and implement effective pharmacy programs and bills.
+ Attends meetings, conferences, and accepts speaking engagements on the Pharmacy Program Manager's behalf if he/she is unable to attend.
+ Research by computer, compendia, and in association with other health-care workers to recommend appropriate and effective drug therapies to advisory committees, as needed.
+ Participates in prescription drug effectiveness reviews to evaluate clinical trials and evidence for drug efficacy.
+ Acts as a resource for Wyoming citizens, state agencies, as well as other public and private groups, as requested on topics relating to pharmacy.
+ Responsible for the management, coordination, and actualization of all Federal and State-mandated program integrity functions as they relate to pharmacy services.
+ Prepares and dispenses medications and compounds in accordance with organizational policy and regulatory guidelines.
+ Validates and verifies prescriber order entry for appropriate drug selection, dose, route, frequency, duration, and indication. Evaluate known allergies, rational therapy, and contraindications. Reviews reasonable directions for use and duplication of therapy. Identifies drug-to-drug, drug/food, and drug-disease interactions. Monitors adverse drug reactions and proper utilization, including over- or under-utilization. Uses clinical laboratory values or monitoring methods to evaluate drug effectiveness, side effects, toxicity, or adverse effects. Determines appropriateness to continue the drug with the current regimen.
+ Assists in inventory, purchasing, and quality control of drugs and products.
+ Consistently maintains inventory and records on narcotics and other drugs as required by law.
+ Reviews patient medication profiles for accuracy, appropriateness, and interactions, and consults with medical and nursing staff regarding medication optimization and medication concerns.
+ Ensures that patient pharmaceutical care meets standards of safety, effectiveness, patient rights, and customer service.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE:
+ Knowledge of principles, concepts, and practices of pharmacy.
+ Knowledge of the basic premises of medical practice, pharmacology, and toxicology.
+ Knowledge of Wyoming and federal laws that apply to the practice of pharmacy.
+ Knowledge of computer systems (Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook).
+ Knowledge of personnel policies and rules.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Pharmacy)
Experience:
1-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Pharmacy)
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Licensure or eligible for licensure as a Pharmacist in the State of Wyoming
Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
+ Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, driving an automobile, etc.
+ Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
