Payroll Team Leader

We have an exciting opportunity for a Payroll Team Lead to join our Business Services Centre (BSC) team, based in either our Sydney (North Ryde) or Melbourne office. In this permanent role, you'll lead a team of 5–7 payroll officers, supporting payroll delivery across the business while fostering continuous improvement and high performance. Key Responsibilities 

Provide effective leadership and direction to payroll team to ensure the efficient and accurate delivery of payroll services to Downer’s employees.Work with the Payroll Manager to ensure Data integrity checks are conducted regularly and documented for compliance and audit purposes.Ensure appropriate training and development programs are implemented to build technical competencies and capabilities of individuals and the team. Oversee team performance, ensuring collaboration among team members and stakeholders with ongoing performance monitoring. Ensure governance and compliance standards are maintained across all payrolls.Contribute to and manage special projects within BAU functions, supporting the strategic direction of the BSC Payroll function.Work closely with the Payroll Manager to provide daily, weekly, and monthly reporting that supports a seamless service experience for internal and external stakeholders.

 

What You Will Bring 

 

You are a strategic and results-driven Payroll Lead with strong leadership skills and a proven ability to support and guide teams toward achieving performance goals. You excel at planning, organising, and communicating with a wide range of stakeholders while driving process improvements to enhance efficiency and service delivery. Adaptable in fast-paced environment, you effectively manage resources and priorities to meet KPIs and business objectives. You will also bring with you:

7+ years’ experience managing a high performing team of payroll professionals.Certificate IV of Payroll Management or similar qualification recognised in Australia for Australian payroll is advantageous. Proven experience in operational disciplines and continuous improvement.Experience in planning and implementing business process improvements and change management within an organisation.Extensive experience with payroll and STP reconciliations, end-of-month (EOM), and end-of-year (EOY) processes.Advanced knowledge of payroll legislation and best practices as applied in the payroll function.
