Description A well-established non-profit organization in Ann Arbor is seeking a Payroll Specialist to join their team on a contract basis. The organization operates payroll in all 50 states, making multi-state payroll knowledge essential to this role. Additionally, they are transitioning to a new payroll system next year and may require someone to assist with their bi-weekly payroll cycle while ensuring seamless integration during the system implementation. Pay is up to $32 per hour, based on experience. Must be able to work onsite at least two days.
Key Responsibilities:
Multi-State Payroll Processing: Administer payroll across all 50 states, ensuring compliance with state-specific regulations for non-exempt and exempt employees.
Bi-Weekly Payroll Management: Process accurate and timely bi-weekly payroll for the organization using ADP Workforce Now (preferred platform).
Canadian Payroll Assistance: While U.S. payroll is mandatory, experience with Canadian payroll is a plus.
Time Card Reviews: Remind employees and supervisors to approve time cards and ensure all hours are accurately reported.
Documentation and System Transition: Assist with preparing payroll documentation to support the upcoming system transition (early next year).
Required Qualifications:
Multi-State Payroll Expertise: Hands-on experience managing payroll in all 50 U.S. states. This is a non-negotiable requirement.
ADP Workforce Now: Proficiency with ADP Workforce Now preferred, but open to candidates with similar payroll systems experience.
Hybrid Work Capability: Ability to commit to working on-site 3 days a week, with remote flexibility for the other 2 days.
Experience with Exempt & Non-Exempt Payroll: Familiarity with payroll processing for both exempt and non-exempt employees.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of Canadian Payroll processes is a plus, but not required.
Proven ability to quickly adapt and work with minimal oversight through SOPs and established workflows.

Detail-Oriented: Ensuring payroll accuracy and compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
Problem-Solver: Someone who can easily connect the dots, “two and two together,” and resolve payroll issues proactively.
Self-Starter: Effectively picking up processes and delivering results with autonomy.
Additional Information:
Contract duration may extend depending on the system transition and organizational needs.

• Familiarity with ADP Workforce Now or similar payroll systems.
• Strong knowledge of payroll operations for large organizations with over 500 employees.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data management and reporting.
• Ability to quickly adapt to new systems and processes, demonstrating a proactive work ethic.
• Experience with Canadian payroll is highly preferred but not mandatory.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills to ensure smooth payroll operations.
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
