Description We are looking for an experienced Payroll and GL Accountant to join our team in Berkeley, California. This role requires a meticulous individual with a strong background in payroll systems and accounting processes to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance. Responsibilities: + Process biweekly payroll through outsourced provider, ensuring compliance with all regulations. + Review and reconcile timecards, leave balances, and benefit deductions. + Maintain accurate payroll system data, including employee classifications, cost allocations, pay rates, and tax settings. + Manage year-end payroll processes, including W-2 preparation with the payroll vendor. + Address and resolve employee payroll questions confidentially and efficiently. + Coordinate with HR to ensure payroll aligns with employee records. + Prepare and record payroll journal entries in the general ledger. + Perform monthly payroll account reconciliations (wages payable, taxes, benefits). + Lead transition to new payroll provider and integrate with HRIS systems. + Maintain up-to-date documentation for full payroll processing cycle. + Monitor labor allocations to ensure costs are properly recorded by account and funding source. + Complete monthly balance sheet reconciliations. + Provide accurate, timely payroll-related financial data for month-end and year-end close. + Assist with audit preparation, including payroll and general ledger documentation. + Ensure payroll and accounting processes comply with wage laws, grant rules, and internal policies. + Support reviews and updates of payroll and accounting procedures to improve efficiency. + Stay current on payroll tax laws, accounting standards, and reporting requirements. + Participate in additional projects as needed. Requirements + Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field (equivalent accounting experience may substitute). + Minimum 2 years of payroll processing and general ledger experience; nonprofit or government-funded background preferred. + Proficient with payroll platforms (e.g., ADP, Paycom, Paylocity) and accounting systems (e.g., NetSuite, MIP, Intacct, fund accounting software). + Solid knowledge of payroll tax regulations, labor cost allocations, California labor laws, and GAAP. + Familiarity with fund accounting and payroll allocations for grant-funded programs. + Strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and data accuracy. + Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical abilities. + Alignment with agency mission and values. + Flexible, adaptable, and comfortable with shifting priorities. + Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and complete tasks proactively. + Continuous learning mindset with a focus on process improvement. + Proficient in current Windows and Office software (Word, Excel); strong Excel skills required.
