Job Summary

As the Financial Counselor, the primary purpose of your job is to coordinate and perform all duties required to assist all patients in financial need with the MassHealth applications and provide follow up as required. Must have a working knowledge of insurance products, especially as it relates to the Hospital, MassHealth and the Commonwealth Connector.

Essential Functions-Work with patients to screen/initiate/complete/update all MassHealth applications using all available portals provided (phone, fax, mail, online applications). Collect any residuals for any patient that are not eligible.
-Assist patients with setting up payment plans in conjunction with Mass General Brigham (MGB) customer service in the central business office in accordance with the Credit and Collection Policy.
-Assist in special projects, and all Hospital Access functions as needed but not limited to.
-Performing other tasks as may be assigned by management.
-Continually keeps current on all insurance and MassHealth changes by attending monthly MassHealth and MGB meetings as required and by yearly completion of state certification.
-Acts as a liaison with the MVH Billing and MGB Customer Service to help patients with billing questions.
-Act as a liaison between patients and hospital departments.
-Enter and update insurance information to patients’ hospital record.
-Work collaboratively with external agencies to assist patients with insurance coverage (Vineyard Healthcare Access).
-Provides follow-up and retention services for patients enrolled with MassHealth and other related programs.
-Link patients to appropriate health and human services (such as primary and specialty medical care), transitional assistance, WIC, elder services, etc.
-Participates in community health networking efforts and groups as appropriate.
-Disseminates State Medicaid program materials in different hospital departments.
-Work in conjunction with ancillary departments and Case Management to coordinate appropriate insurance coverage to maximize reimbursement.
-Provides follow-up and retention services for patients enrolled with MassHealth/Connector Care.
-Works assigned work queues and trackers to resolve any outstanding issues to maximize reimbursement to the hospital.
-Respect others.
-Protects and preserves confidential information.
-Complies with the MVH Code of Conduct.
-Complies with all organizational and regulatory regarding ethical business practices, EMTALA and HIPAA.
-Demonstrates reliability and accountability.
-Adheres to dress code; appearance is clean and neat.


 

Qualifications

Education High School Diploma or Equivalent required and Associate's Degree Related Field of Study preferred Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No Licenses and Credentials Experience Must have at least three years in hospital or medical billing plus follow-up experience, including PC experience with working knowledge of all phases in billing procedures. Prior customer service experience. 3-5 years required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Must be knowledgeable of local and regional health and human service resources. - Must be able to read, write legibly, speak clearly and understand the English language. - Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with staff, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public. - Must be able to critically analyze problems and use lateral thinking to provide effective solutions. - Keen attention to detail and the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and completing priorities. - Adeptness at making decisions under pressure and meeting tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment. - Able to provide superb customer service while building and maintaining positive working relationships. - Must have a positive attitude toward working independently and within a team environment and always take the initiative to help others. - Maintain excellent written and oral communication skills and communicate effectively in a sensitive and timely manner. - Must complete state training and obtain state certificate to become a Certified Applications Counselor (CAC) within the first 30 days of employment. - Must have a working knowledge of MA Health regulations and policies. - Must have working knowledge of MA Health gateway system. - Epic and Excel experience is a plus.
