Patient Care Technician - Full-Time Nights

Department: 4W/5W Rehabilitation
Schedule: Full-Time, Night Shift 7p-7a
Requirements: Every other weekend and every other holiday

Position Summary
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides direct patient care and supports clinical staff in delivering high-quality care. This role involves assisting with daily living activities, therapeutic procedures, and monitoring patient status. The PCT plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, respectful, and efficient care environment.
Key Responsibilities
Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, and repositioning.
Support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies under the direction of clinical staff.
Perform core nursing assistant duties including:
Vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, intake and output (I&O), weights, specimen collection, Foley catheter care.
Perform at least four of the following advanced tasks:
Phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing changes, Foley catheter removal, point-of-care testing, bladder scanning, straight catheterization, IV catheter removal.
Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints per protocol.
Respond to call lights, answer telephones, pass meal trays, and transport patients.
Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
Document patient care activities in the medical record according to established procedures.
Identify and communicate learning needs; seek feedback and support for professional development.
Participate in department initiatives, quality improvement projects, and support operational efficiency.
Ensure equipment issues are reported promptly and appropriately.
Additional Competencies
In addition to standard responsibilities, the PCT may be required to demonstrate competency in one or more of the following based on departmental needs:
Phlebotomy/venipuncture
Peripheral IV removal
Indwelling Foley catheter removal
Basic arrhythmia recognition
12-lead EKG
NG tube clamping and removal
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of a nursing assistant or patient care technician training program preferred.
Previous experience in a healthcare setting is a plus.
Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.
Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
+ High school diploma or GED.
+ Must also have either:
+ a) 1 Year of general healthcare experience, OR
+ b) 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion for those with less than 1 year of experience, OR
+ c) enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
+ d) completion of a bachelors degree in a health sciences field.
+ Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class
+ Successful completion of eRecord training.
+ Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hireCPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLS preferred
