Responsibilities*

A.    Patient Care Duties

1.     Observation/Monitoring

Assist with admissions, discharges and transfersObtain and record vital signs including: temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and reports abnormal values to RNRespond to monitor alarmsAssist with connecting to monitors and calibrationApply ECG electrodes and pulse ox probe; attach patient to travel monitorObtain and record height and weightMeasure and record intake and outputEmpty and record outputs from drains, urinary catheter, bedpan, urinal, etc.Label and secure patient belongings including sensory aides and assist devices

2.     Specimen Collection

Perform point of care testing; maintain and calibrate equipment and suppliesCollect specimens including urine and sputum

3.     Intravenous Lines

Prime IV tubing; time and date bag per policyPrime central/pressure set ups (after bag spiked by RN); time and date bag per policyDiscontinue peripheral IV

4.     Patient ADLs

Provide toileting/bedpan/urinalsAccompany, escort, ambulate, move, turn, dangle, lift, attend, hold, position patientsProvide patient nourishment by providing snacks/beverages, assist with ordering meals/snacks, feed patients as neededChange gown, bed, linens as neededAssist to undress/dress as needed

5.     Urinary Catheters

Perform intermittent and clean urinary catheterizationsConnect, drains and disconnect urinary cathetersAssemble intermittent and continuous bladder irrigation suppliesDiscontinue urinary cathetersDetermine bladder status with bladder scanner

6.     Wound/Skin Care

Perform pre-operative skin prep/hair clipping as neededProvide skin care at the direction of the RNCleanse and redress non-sterile woundsAssist RN with complex dressing changesCare for permanent drain sites and apply appropriate collection device; i.e. ostomy, G-tube, etcApply binders, ACE wraps, hot and cold applications

7.     Respiratory Care

Connect oxygen delivery device and set oxygen flow rate as directed by RNAssist with trach care on stable tracheotomies including cleaning and redressing; assists with tape and tie changesAssist with endotracheal tube care and tape changesCoaches and prompts patient to use incentive spirometer, and coughing/deep breathingPerforms routine oral and nasal suctioning

8.     Other Interventions

Measure and obtain anti-embolism hose; apply sequential compression devicesPerform patient care/comfort, safety roundsProvide family support, escort in/out of unitAssist with application and maintain restraintsFunction as a messengerObtain supplies and medications as necessary

B.    Clerical Duties

Identify and print on-line documents including H&P, consent, blood consentMake wristbandsPrint patient labelsAnswer telephonesOrder equipmentFax documentsPage as requestedLabel equipment charge slipsTemporarily locate patients in computer systemUse multiple computer systems

C.    Environment

Set up patient bays for admission or procedureMaintain orderliness of patient bays, unit including equipment/cords, linen, trash, patient belongings, etc.Clean and maintain inventory and outdates of equipment and supplies in patient care areasCheck emergency equipmentMake up stretchers for patient admissionObtain, open, and arrange equipment and supplies for specific proceduresStock supplies and equipment in patient care areas

D.    Transport

Assist with patient transport as needed

E.    Reporting/lunch/breaks

Reports to charge nurse at beginning and end of shift, whenever leaving assigned work area, when going on break/lunch or when asked to  assist in other areasAvailable to nursing staff in assigned area and others as neededLunch and break times are assigned by the charge nurse dailyRequired Qualifications*

High school diploma, GED or equivalent, ability to read and write,  and one of the following:

Junior status in an accredited BSN program2nd year in accredited ADN programBachelors Degree in Applied Medical Sciencea minimum 1-year recent experience in an unlicensed assistive role in a patient care setting, such as nurse aide in a hospital settinga minimum two years experience in in an unlicensed assistive role in a patient care setting in a nursing home or other health care environment

This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients. 

Desired Qualifications*Attended and passed CNA course or CNA state certificationRecent experience in an acute care inpatient settingBasic computer skillsDemonstrated communication skills, both written and verbalWork Schedule

Work schedule is flexible shift length, with start time at 9am M-F.
