The Patient Advocate **coordinates directly with patients in a hospital setting** to provide support and communicates with agencies, hospital staff, and others to advocate on behalf of self-pay patients and other underinsured patients Location: Sheffield, AL 35660 Shift: Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm Duties and Responsibilities: + Assist patients and others to complete forms, applications, and other paperwork. + Collect and review patient information to determine patient’s eligibility. + Prepare documents, review for accuracy and completeness. + Provide technical assistance on agency issues, services, and programs. + Maintain and/or create files or record keeping systems. Sort, label files, and retrieve documents or other materials. + Interact with patients at the site to provide real-time service support and address patient concerns. + Develop and retain professional relationships with hospital staff. + Handle caseload, retrieve, sustain, and communicate all designated reports. + Maintain confidentiality and adhere to EMTALA and HIPAA guidelines. + Other duties as assigned. Experience and Qualifications: + 1+ year of work experience in health care, medical insurance, hospital, or clinic + High School or GED required; associate degree or equivalent from 2-year college a plus. + Comfortable working in a fast-paced diverse environment + Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. + Excellent communication skills to interact with patients and hospital staff. + Ability to travel locally to other work sites. + Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel pivot tables, Project, and PowerPoint) + Familiarity with medical terminology and healthcare processes. Cognizant will only consider applicants for this position who are legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring company sponsorship now or at any time in the future. **Salary and Other Compensation** : The hourly rate for this position is between $21.00 – 24.00 per hour, depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
