Course details Professional Responsibility and Leadership (PRL) is an interdisciplinary course that builds on prior coursework within the Social Impact Core Curriculum as well as other coursework at Stern and at NYU. The basic format of the course is a discussion seminar. These discussions draw on three different sources, including (i) the students’ own personal experiences and values, (ii) thoughtful insights drawn from a variety of academic disciplines (including philosophy, literature, history, and art, as well as the natural and social sciences), and (iii) relevant business cases. In each class session, students consider a set of thoughtful accounts identified by the instructor as starting points for discussion, and then they integrate experiences and business cases that have personal relevance for them. Rather than involving the one-way dispensation of content from faculty to student, the course unfolds as a process of students and faculty working together in response to open-ended, age-old questions. Course Objectives + Reflect on why they are embarking on a chosen career, how they intend to act as professionals, and what it means to flourish as a human + Think systematically about common moral or ethical dilemmas that may arise + Cultivate the habit of engaging in reflective dialogue with diverse stakeholders Teaching Information Each class session may include a variety of activities, including discussion, in-class reading and writing, role-playing, and other exercises. These various activities will be designed and facilitated by the instructor to allow students to engage in reflective dialogue. The instructor’s teaching style should be highly interactive. Instructors are expected to participate in the grading and administration of a variety of assignments throughout the course, including weekly writing evaluations and a final paper. The instructor is also responsible for: + Reviewing course material and generally adhering to a common syllabus (which will be provided) + Attending annual virtual meetings of all course lecturers, if possible, or otherwise staying up to date on course developments through provided documents and emails + Creating a classroom environment where students feel comfortable participating and learning and providing extra support to students through office hours, when requested About NYU and NYU Florence, Italy: Founded in 1831, New York University is the largest private university in the United States.
