Packaging Technologist

Job Description:

As the Packaging Technologist, you will work on the design, testing, and implementation of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging solutions for the EMEA brands. This role will work with internal cross-functional teams, as well as external suppliers and co-mans, to deliver on business goals of innovation, optimization, value leadership, and sustainability. The role will also be heavily involved in packaging data reporting for internal sustainability goals, external customers, as well as changing regulations (PPWR).

What are we looking for?

A BS degree in Packaging, Mechanical Engineering or a relevant degree, or equivalent experience

Some experience working in a technical packaging role

Ability to work autonomously as well as collaborate cross-functionally

Detail-oriented and able to review and approve packaging drawings, artwork, and technical documents for accuracy.

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to interpret data and make technical recommendations.

Strong communication skills, especially when providing product insight and feedback to external manufacturers and internal teams

Ability to thrive in a small business environment & tenacity to overcome hurdles.

Quick learner and adaptable to changing market conditions and regulations.

Ability to travel to co-mans in Europe and UK, or any other relevant location

What will be your key responsibilities?

Business and Technical Projects:

Develop new or existing packaging for line extensions, renovations, and value leadership opportunities.

Collaborate cross-functionally on project briefs and deliver pack-related project goals

Lead or support plant trials by partnering with co-mans on packaging activities, conducting performance tests, and interpreting data/results to drive projects forward

Coordinate transit tests when needed, and report results back to the project team

Develop post-trial action plans and risk assessments with internal and external teams

Support the completion of technical drawings and artwork checks, per specifications and legal text

Identify and scope opportunities for continuous improvements at manufacturers (line efficiencies, waste reduction)

Provide feedback on packaging materials and suppliers to Commercial Sourcing teams, based on observations from sample reviews and trials.  

Assist in managing current online database of technical drawings, packaging specifications, and sustainability data, in partnership with broader R&D Pack team.

Support scoping and potential implementation of future digital platform for packaging design and specifications.

Support the broader cross-functional team on idea generation and pipeline building for productivity and innovation.

Holiday cover within the R&D team, including support on packaging activities while colleagues are out of office.

Sustainability and Regulatory Reporting:

Own and execute sustainability projects within the packaging pillars of EU’s PPWR, as well as internal Mars goals (e.g. pack minimization, recycled content)

Collate required data to support quarterly internal sustainability reporting

Submit EPR Reporting twice per year using internal processes

Manage internal database for EPR reporting, including all change management activities

Own or assist with external customer EPR requests

Bring forward ideas for sustainable material solutions as part of the renovation pipeline
