Job Responsibilities:

Scope of PositionThe Packaging Engineer is responsible for the development, maintenance and implementation of packaging solutions that ensure the protection, quality, and efficiency of Tier 1 automotive parts throughout the supply chain. This role involves collaboration with various departments, including product engineering, manufacturing engineering, purchasing, production, quality, logistics, and suppliers, to optimize packaging designs and processes.

Minimum RequirementsBachelor’s degree required; Packaging/Materials/Mechanical/Industrial Engineering area of study preferred.3+ years experience in Automotive manufacturing, w/experience in packaging, AMR’s and/or logistics.Strong understanding of engineering as it relates to internal/external logistics planning and warehousing operations.Experience in designing and collaborating on returnable/expendable packaging solutions.Self-motivated, problem-solver with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.Excellent English written and verbal communication skills, Spanish is a plus.Experience in Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Just-In-Time (JIT) supply, Pull Systems and Magna Factory (MAFACT).Working knowledge of SAP/ISO/IATF certifications preferred.

Job Specific ResponsibilitiesDesign and DevelopmentDevelop innovative packaging solutions for new/existing components and assemblies.Create detailed packaging specifications, drawings and prototypes.Conduct packaging testing to ensure durability and compliance w/industry and/or customer standards.Project ManagementResponsible for managing all packaging for each of 150+ components on bill of materials of new Powertrain programs.Work closely w/AME team on launching new automotive production line packaging.Support customer with customer packaging design and development.Collaborate and coordinate suppliers/vendors to source and design packaging to specifications.Plan packaging progress “milestones” and ensure timely achievement to comply with launch schedule.Logistics EngineeringSupport lineside materials feed packaging design, with focus on AMR and robotics compatibility.Co-develop materials marketplace and warehouse storage design to minimize material feed cycles / distance.Calculate returnable dunnage loop size and quantity requirements based on supplier locations, packaging weight / dimensions / pack density, and maintain fleet calculations for facility.Packaging Procedural Creation/Communication Champion creation, maintenance and compliance of all materials related procedures, standardized work instructions, and job element sheets in accordance with MAFACT, IATF, ISO, MQS and other industry manufacturing and safety standards.Update / edit / add supplier manual for expendable packaging requirements.Support suppliers with development of packaging data sheets and packaging instructions for supplier returnable dunnage.Approve and maintain packaging data sheets for facility.Support implementation of supplier / customer label requirementsContribute packaging procedures, ISPM-15 measures, and other required deliverables per MAFACT standards.Travel occasionally to suppliers / other Magna divisions, for launch and product specific acquisition of best practices and lessons learned, and integrate/implement applicable information into MPT Shelby Twp procedure and practice.Quality AssuranceEnsure packaging meets regulatory, safety and quality standards / objectives.Maintain documentation and records for packaging specifications and test results.Conduct root cause analysis for packaging / transit related quality issues and create / support implementation of corrective actions.General ResponsibilitiesEnsure that company policies and procedures are adhered to including Employee Handbook.Manage job responsibilities and deliverables while treating team members with dignity and respect and in accordance with the Magna Employee’s Charter and Core Values, which includes a commitment to fair treatment and a safe and healthful workplace.Responsible for promoting and seeking excellence in all aspects of business.
