We are currently hiring an Outreach Specialist to support a federally funded disaster recovery program in California. Our communications practice supports a wide range of public- and private-sector initiatives—from health and housing to energy, workforce, and disaster recovery. In this role, you will collaborate with disaster recovery experts to design and deliver outreach that ensures disaster-impacted residents understand their options and can take action. This position will assist the Outreach and Engagement Lead in planning and conducting outreach events and will serve as the on-site staff presence at these events.

Key Responsibilities:

Support development and execution of outreach and engagement activities, ensuring alignment with program communications strategies.Serve as the on-the-ground staff at outreach and intake events, coordinating logistics, staffing, and event documentation.Coordinate with contractors, local governments, community partners, and long-term recovery groups to maximize outreach impact.Engage directly with the public, helping residents understand recovery resources and guiding them to the appropriate program contacts.Assist in creating and distributing outreach materials (e.g., flyers, fact sheets, presentations, digital content) that explain complex program information in plain language.Support translation and interpretation efforts to ensure accessibility for varying audiences.Monitor outreach activities and provide reporting to assess effectiveness and recommend improvements.

Required Qualifications:

BS or BA degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism or related field5+ years of previous work experience to include: planning and conducting local outreach events, demonstrated experience coordinating event logistics and staffing, and/or previous communications experience with implementing high visibility public program communications.

Professional Skills: 

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel).Willingness and ability to travel frequently to counties where outreach events are held, with the understanding that events may require work outside of regular business hours and occasional overnight travel.Previous communications experience at the federal level (e.g. FEMA or HUD) or state level and experience with implementing high visibility public program communicationsExcellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills with demonstrated success building relationships with clients, partners, and community stakeholders.Strong writing skills with knowledge of plain language principles and experience simplifying complex program information for diverse public audiences.Superior organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities in fast-moving environments.Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.A team-oriented mindset with adaptability and a can-do attitude.

Preferred Skills/Experience: 

Experience working in a consulting firm or public agency preferred.Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and video editing softwareExperience engaging Limited English Proficiency, low-income, or special needs populations.Familiarity with California state or local government processes.Spanish language fluency

Job Location(s): Candidate must be California-based and available to travel. Outreach events are expected to take place in the counties of Los Angeles, Monterey, San Benito, San Diego, Santa Cruz, Tulare, and Tuolumne, as well as the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation (Humboldt County).

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.

The pay range for this position based on full-time employment is:

$80,743.00 - $137,263.00
