Position Title:  Outreach and Interpretation Individual Placement - AmeriCorps 

Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements 

Site Location: 271 Highway 190, Death Valley, CA 92328 

Application Timeline: Preference given to applicants that submit application by 9/30/2025 

Terms of Service: 

Start Date: December 1, 2025 

End Date: November 13, 2026 (with possibility of extending the position until early April) 

AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 1700 Hour 

 

Purpose: 

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Death Valley National Park will host a Outreach and Visitor Services Intern.  

 

This Outreach and Interpretation Individual Placement is an AmeriCorps position that will work with permanent and seasonal National Park Service staff to provide quality visitor services and interpretation to park visitors. The position will research and develop family programming that focuses on park resources. They will also play a key role in the planning an execution of family programs during the 2026 Dark Sky Festival in collaboration with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. The member will be trained in all aspects of interpretive programming and visitors services and how to make meaningful connections with the public including youth and their families.   

 

Description of Duties: 

Answer a wide variety of visitor questions and assist with trip planning at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center 

Respond to email, voicemail, phone calls, and postal mail requests for information 

Prepare and deliver programs specifically designed for youth and their families 

Assist with the planning and implementation of family programs during the Death Valley Dark Sky Festival 

Present talks following a prescribed outline and that aligns with Death Valley’s major interpretive themes 

Provide informal interpretation by roving popular locations in the park 

Attend off site community events to promote park resources and foster connections with residents 

Crosstrain with other divisions to develop a broad understanding of park management operations 

Collaborate with park staff and community partners on special projects 

 

Qualifications: 

United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien 

Applicants must be between ages of 18-30 years old, or up to 35 for veteran, based on Public Land Corps Act of 1993 authorizing this AmeriCorps opportunity.  

Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award. 

Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check. 

A valid driver’s license 

Applicants must be able to lift up to 25 lbs 

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

Education or experience related to astronomy, geology, or environmental studies 

Experience with public speaking 

Tolerance of high summer temperatures  

Capable of working as part of a team and independently  

Bilingual 

 

 

Additional Position and Community Information 

The position will be in Furnace Creek, CA within the boundaries of Death Valley National Park. The park is home to the hottest, driest, and lowest elevation in North America. Winters are relatively mild with warm days and cool to cold nights. During the summer Death Valley is regularly one of the hottest places on Earth.  

 

Gift shops, gas, and convenient stores can be found within the park’s boundary. However, the closest major amenities (chain grocery stores, restaurants) are an hour outside of the park in the town of Pahrump, NV. Las Vegas, NV is two hours away, has a major airport and all the amenities and entertainment of a major city. Cell phone service is spotty with limited 3G but internet is available in park housing and at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center.

Time Requirements: 

This position is expected to serve 40 hours each week, but exact service schedules may vary.  

Lunch breaks will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service. 

Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Evaluation and Reporting: 

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service. 

 

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
