**Description:**
**Summary**
Nutrition is a pivotal part of the Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation Program & cardiology. This position is the content expert for the nutritional education components of the ICR program. In addition, this is the clinical expert for nutritional components of the CAD, CHF, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and weight management programs at Michigan Heart.

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
+ Manage nutritional based education components of the Pritikin ICR program
+ Assists with Pritikin best practices implementation and continuous program improvement
+ Provides expert nutrition education/counseling to patients and their families in both individual and group sessions.
+ Acts as a consultant to physicians, nurses and other members of the health care team regarding nutritional aspects of patient care.
+ Acts as an expert resource and consultant in the field of outpatient medical nutrition therapy for physician, other health care professionals, or the community at large.
+ Conducts Pritikin nutritional workshops Conducts Pritikin cooking school workshops Serves as “chef” for the program Supports the use of Pritikin educational materials and determines additional resources that might be needed to meet patient needs. Along with all team members, is available to program participants and staff on the ICR floor to interact, educate and assist patients in achieving health goals Assesses patient nutritional status based on input from physician, medical record, and various clinical assessment methodologies.
+ Develops CAD, CHF, metabolic syndrome, diabetic and/or weight loss nutritional treatment plan which supports medical and nutrition standards of care and addresses areas of nutritional deficit/excess.
+ Interprets laboratory tests as appropriate
+ Triages all lipid lab results and provides patient feedback based on lipid clinic protocols and physician consultation where appropriate.
+ Continuously monitors patient adherence to medical nutrition therapy according to treatment plan goals and outcome measures. Modifies treatment plan as needed to maximize patient progress toward goals.
+ Maintains documentation of parent progress through written or dictated progress notes.
+ Clinical nutritionist will also consider age specific, developmental and cultural needs of each patient.

**REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE**
**Education:**
Bachelor's degree in nutrition/dietetics or foods and. Masters degree in nutrition or related field preferred.
Completion of an approved hospital dietetic internship program or its equivalent is necessary.
Registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration necessary
Registry Eligible- registry must be completed within 90 days of hire
**Experience:**
Two or more years of progressively more responsible experience preferably in lifestyle change management
**Licensure:**
Registered Dietitian or
Registry eligible - registry must be completed within 90 days of hire
Member of the ADA.
**REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients and their families, physicians, other hospital associates as well as external agencies or groups.
Able to function autonomously, self-directed and high levels of judgment and decision-making.
Demonstrates a willingness to be flexible in an environment subject to change.
Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and those coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practice immediately to management.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in order to convey goals, processes and issues.
Proven analytical, judgment, problem-solving and organizational skills. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care in the assigned area.
Ability to assess patients’ age-related needs in order to provide optimal care options.
Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
