OT-PT Assistant

The Regional Rehabilitation Centre is a specialized rehabilitation facility located at the Hamilton General site. The centre serves patients from Hamilton and the surrounding area who have had an ABI, Stroke or Spinal Cord Injury. As part of the rehabilitation program patients work with the multidisciplinary team to improve their mobility. When appropriate, patients will also attend therapy in the RRC hydrotherapy program.

As a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team, the Occupational Therapy/ Physiotherapy Assistant (OTA/PTA) will collaborate in the provision of therapeutic services for patients living with ABI, Stroke, SCI injury or other major neurological/musculoskeletal conditions . The OTA/PTA will practice under the guidance and direction of a qualified Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist. Care will be delivered on the unit or in the hydrotherapy area depending on patient and program needs.

Graduate of a recognized, accredited OTA/PTA (must be dual trained) Certificate or Diploma program from an institution accredited by the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program (OTA PTA EAP).Demonstrated experience/knowledge (listed on resume/profile) and 2 recent years therapeutic experience within the last 5 years in the field of neurological rehabilitation with populations such as Spinal Cord, Stroke, and ABI.Recent (within the last 5 years) experience of hydrotherapy within a pool setting. Candidates should be able to tolerate working in a warm and humid hydrotherapy area.Demonstrated and documented continuing education, advanced training in hydrotherapy/pool therapy skills. Certificates/diplomas related to continuing education may be requested.Able to use safe body mechanics/handling techniques during therapeutic activities (complex transfers, ADLs, equipment use, exercise programming in and out of the pool)Demonstrated knowledge (e.g. certificates/diplomas) in safety procedures/protocols with patients on land in the hydrotherapy setting.Current Basic Life Saving Certificate (BCLS).Ability to communicate a clear understanding of the OTA/PTA role and OT/PT services to client/family/staff as required.Flexibility, communication, problem solving, organizational skills, conflict resolution skills and the ability to prioritize shared workload among many therapists.Computer skills in Microsoft office applications, experience with electronic medical record system is considered an asset
