Element has an opportunity for an Organics Department Supervisor at our Fort Wayne, IN location. The Organics Department Supervisor is the subject matter expert on all organics analyses, guides the technical staff in timely completion of daily work, works with teams to optimize and develop new methods, and may be designated as the main contact for customer on-site visits. The supervisor is also a key member of the department's safety team and provides awareness around safety first. You will be relied upon heavily by other colleagues such as Technicians, Chemists, Projects Managers, Quality Coordinator, Operations Manager, General Manager and other positions.
Responsibilities Responsible for organizing and directing the daily activities of the Organics Department including Preparation and Extraction, Volatiles, Semi-Volatiles, PCBs, Pesticides, and PFAS analysisResponsible for supervising organics laboratory personnel. Play an active role in recruiting, hiring, training and people development within the departmentMonitor backlogs in LIMS to meet method holding times as well as client project TAT requirementsMange workflow and communicate work status and laboratory capabilities to project management and laboratory managementReview analytical data for accuracy and completenessResponsible for troubleshooting analytical instrumentation and analytical processes. Oversee equipment maintenance within the departmentAct as primary technical expert for the organics department. Set up new equipment and provide method development as required to support growthDevelop, review and revise standard operating procedures for the Organics departmentServe as a backup for staff within the departmentWork closely with the quality coordinator to ensure the organics department produces well rounded, litigation quality data that is in line with Element’s SOPs, Quality Service Manual, and accreditationsPrepare and deliver performance reviews, development plans and performance improvement plans for staffOrder supplies for the Organics DepartmentOffer recommendations for new equipment/procedures to increase productivity and efficiency within the departmentDemonstrates and promotes the company vision Skills / Qualifications BS or BA in chemistry or related science field with at least one year of supervisory experience preferred. 5+ years supervisory experience in the Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) industry may substitute for a degreeWorking knowledge of laboratory quality and safetyStrong computer skills and basic mathematical skills with the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry a plusDemonstrate excellent time management and organizational skillsAbility to lift <50 lbs. often and >50 lbs. on occasion as well as stand on feet for long periods of timeExperience with LIMS data entry and data reviewAbility to work primarily alone and make independent decisions throughout the workdayAbility to communicate and demonstrate the importance of meeting all applicable requirements of assigned departmentProven ability to read, understand and interpret program or test requirements and have ability to analyses and translate into finished testing or report dataExcellent communication skills and telephone etiquetteProficient skills in word processing and spreadsheet softwareProven and recognized ability to provide accurate and timely status reports to internal and external customersAbility to track multiple testing jobs / programs from start to finish and assist with contract review of job status daily, including follow-up emails and phone calls daily to and from internal and external customers
