Optical Design Engineer
Job Description

We are seeking a seasoned sensor design engineer to conceive, develop, prototype, and deploy data-collection systems at scale. These systems will gather information about products, which will be utilized by machine learning and machine vision systems to guide robotic manipulation of objects, among other applications. The data collection systems will be installed into various facilities to capture the necessary data for process automation. The team collaborates with machine learning scientists, fulfillment associates, labeling teams, field engineering and maintenance personnel, and with diverse customers worldwide.

ResponsibilitiesDesign camera and optical systems of various types, understanding critical optical technologies such as lens specification, aberrations, calibration, color balance, aperture, exposure, gain, motion-induced blur, and lighting.Explore other active and passive sensing modalities such as structured light, stereo, lidar, radar, x-ray, infrared, and RFID.Engage with all types of customers ranging from executives to developers and warehouse operations staff.Work in a fast-paced environment where delivery time for new products and features is typically measured in months.Collaborate with scientists and non-technical customers to help them achieve their goals.Essential SkillsData collection and optical design skillsExperience in machine vision and prototypingBS degree in electrical engineering, optics, or vision systems4 years of experience in hardware development, specifically in developing digital optical and machine vision systems for industrial applicationsStrong interest in learning customer requirements in the data collection spaceExcellent oral and written communication skillsAbility to develop data collection software (sensor interface) for experimental and prototyping purposesAbility to design, acquire, and prototype sensing systemsAdditional Skills & QualificationsMS or PhD in electrical engineering, optics, or vision systemsExperience with multi-sensor systems and non-optical sensing systemsFamiliarity with computer vision and machine learningWork Environment

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $50.30 - $56.30/hr.
