The Occupational Health Nurse is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the occupational health services provided to business/industry and UMMH Harrington. This RN provides physical assessments for preplacement screens/physicals and work-related injuries. This RN will performs pulmonary function testing, audiometric assessments, vision screens, breath alcohol tests, phlebotomy for collection of venous samples for assessment, collection of samples for substance abuse testing. The Occupational Health RN interprets findings from provided screens and manages cases accordingly. The RN will manage work related injury cases along with performing work site evaluations. The RN will consult with Medical Director, team members, employers and insurers as required. Duties may be added or altered as needs of the department change.

I.    Major Responsibilities: 
1.    Demonstrates application of the current nursing theory and skills as defined by the State Nurse Practice Acts, The State Medical Practice Acts, the State Pharmacy Acts, the AAOHN’s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics and HIPPA. Applies OSHA, NIOSH, State Department of Industrial Board, DPH, and CDC regulations to individual company and municipality needs.
2.    Conducts or assists in preplacement assessments, periodic and medical surveillance, work related injury/illness evaluations and referrals within the protocols developed in collaboration with the Occupational Health Physician and the Medical Director of Employee Health at UMMH Harrington. The RN will communicates current health status as it relates to the evaluation of employee/patient. The RN will ensure exams are conducted within specific state and federal regulations.
3.    Initiates modified case management for work related injuries/illnesses, collaborating with the insurer and employer to reach resolution of injury/illness. Supervises case management by allied professionals in the department. 
4.    Demonstrates ability to recommend programs and intervention strategies to individual companies; plans safety and wellness programs, coordinates ancillary staff required to perform service and to ensure quality and continuity of care. 
5.    Evaluates the effectiveness of services provided and incorporates necessary improvements. Assists with monitoring activities related to improvement of patient/client care, outcomes and/or systems.
6.    Ensures the confidential handling of health information according to the guidelines set by HIPPA, State and Federal agencies. Maintains accurate, complete and concise records.
7.    Initiates job responsibilities independently, set priorities and arranges workload appropriately. Adjusts activities to meet the demands of a dynamic environment.

II.    Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1.    Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse licensure in good standing.
2.    Maintains proficiency and/or certification in use of Meditech System, Spirometry, Occupational Hearing Conservation, Breath Alcohol Technician, Drug Screen Collection and Respirator Fit Testing.
3.    Basic Life Support (BLS).

Preferred:
1.    Bachelors degree in Nursing.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1.    Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with a variety of patients, clients, and staff members, regardless of varied racial, ethnic, religious, gender or social backgrounds.
Preferred:
1.   Minimum of 2 years Occupational Health experience preferred.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments.  The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III.    Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
(Office jobs only) Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
