Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Medical Oncology for Lehighton Campuses

The Oncology Nurse Practitioner or Oncology Physician Assistant, under clinical supervision of the Physicians assists in the delivery of patient care services for the adult oncology in-patient population. This position will require travel between the Monroe and Anderson Campuses. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: + Provides total, comprehensive care to patients by applying the nursing process in an organized and systematic manner to include: + Performs comprehensive history and physical assessment for patients + Orders appropriate diagnostic studies. + Consult with attending oncologists, hematologists/gyn-oncologists to determine appropriate medical management and follow-up. + Completes admission orders, treatment orders, and discharge orders as needed within scope of practice. + Interprets and utilizes clinical data in the plan of care. + Assesses patient for potential risk factors. + Recognizes and integrates patients’ special needs and individualizes care using an interdisciplinary approach. + Integrates pain management and supportive care in the plan of care, as needed. + Performs in office procedures as directed (e.g. bone marrow biopsies). + Responds in an emergency situation; initiates care until medical emergency staff arrives. + Adheres to infection control standards specific to patient care. + Assumes accountability for managing the delivery of patient care. + Utilizes oncology national standards of care and Oncology Nursing Society standards of oncology patient management. + Adheres to and models all hospital-based regulatory and non-regulatory practice based requirements of the organization. + Participates and offers presentations throughout the St. Luke’s Cancer Center programs as well as community events for education and public relations. + Assumes an active role Cancer Survivorship, patient education, and interdisciplinary care coordination. + Knowledgeable in oncology clinical trials and pain management. + Monitors individualized treatment plans and uses critical thinking skills to proactively manage unexpected toxicities over the course of cancer care delivery to minimize breaks in physician- prescribed treatment plans. + Arranges appropriate plan of care and follow-up based on outcomes of diagnostic lab an physical assessment findings unique to oncologic patient populations. + Communicates plan of care with appropriate providers including the physician, the nursing staff, the nurse navigators and the social work team, as well as with the patient and family members. Provides patient and family instruction related to the plan of care, disease process, new treatment plans, and medication regimens. Advocates for patients ensuring patient/family participation in care, knowledge of treatment options, and understanding of patient rights. Considers the holistic needs of the patients and works the interdisciplinary team e.g. palliative care. + In collaboration with the patient care team, works with clinical research members in all phases of clinical research. Assists in St. Luke’s Cancer Centers departmental performance improvement processes, outcome reviews, and compliance with all regulatory requirements. Seeks professional development by maintaining knowledge of current literature and research in the field of oncology medicine, pursues educational opportunities for professional growth (e.g., CEU’s, update conferences), serving on department, hospital or community committees and participates in and presenting at local, regional and national professional organizations. + Participates in educational opportunities; provides formal and informal educational programs for other members of the health care team consistent with evidence-based practice standards. + Provides community education, health promotion, and outreach related to oncology care. Complies with all payer credentialing, coding, and billing requirements of the St. Luke’s Hematology/Oncology Specialists. + Able to keep Meaningful use data and submits all required activity and statistical reports to Practice Administrator, Physician Services as required/requested. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements. Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Sits up to 6 hours a day for 2 hours at a time. Stands for up to 3 hours a day for up to 1 hour at a time. Walks up to 4 hours a day for up to 15 minutes at a time. Frequently uses the fingers and hands to manipulate objects. Frequently lifts, carries, pushes and/or pulls up to 10lbs. Occasionally/rarely lifts, carries, pushes or pulls objects of greater weights. Must have ability for touching as it relates to perceiving attributes of an object. Must have the ability to hear normal conversation. Must have the ability for seeing as it relates to general, near, far, color, peripheral vision. Must have visual attributers of depth perception and visual monotony. Frequently must reach above shoulder level. Occasionally must stoop, bend & crouch. EDUCATION: Master of Science Degree with completion of a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program. Registered and currently recorded with the Pennsylvania/New Jersey Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Pennsylvania and New Jersey or Pennsylvania/New Jersey State Physician Assistant License. BLS certification required. OCN certification preferred, if applicable. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Preferably minimum of two years oncology experience and 2-4 years adult (oncology highly preferred) NP or PA experience preferably in an in-patient setting. Experience in chemotherapy orders and administration and in-patient/outpatient oncology patient symptom management required. WORK SCHEDULE: The schedule although subject to change is full time days, Monday through Friday, Sundays as needed to meet the needs of the department.
