6 South is a busy acute surgical and trauma unit with 26 ward beds and 6 step-down beds.
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for acute surgery and trauma at the Hamilton General Hospital will provide leadership and promote excellence in patient /family centered nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. The NP would support the clinical activity of the acute surgical physicians and the associated patient care and interventions through the acute surgical and trauma service. This would include holistic nursing clinical care, monitoring techniques and trauma interventions in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Collaborating with the interprofessional team members and using a patient and family centered model of care, the NP is responsible to: Provide direct patient care, coordination of care, discharge planning and the coordination of related community and other resources for this patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate and / or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interprofessional teams. The NP will work in partnership with surgeons, the trauma service, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education. The NP reports to the Director of Neurosciences , Hamilton General Hospital and the Chief of Interprofessional Practice. Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class RN(EC)2. Completion of a Post-Master's of Nursing - Nurse Practitioner program with a focus in Acute care for Adults
3. Minimum of five (5) years recent clinical experience supporting a population of acute neuroscience and trauma patients
4. Demonstrated experience in research and program development
5. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and competency to work within interprofessional teams
6. Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skills
7. Experience and ability to lead and facilitate the development and implementation of basic and advanced education programs for patients, families, staff and other professionals
8. Experience in providing leadership in the development and implementation of policies and best practice guidelines
9. Experience in the development and maintenance of medical directives
10. Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem solving, critical thinking, organization and prioritization
11. Demonstrated mastery of effective communication with patients, families, coworkers, both written and verbal
12. Demonstrated ability to work in a consultative role with the members of the interprofessional team
13. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations
14. Demonstrated ability to promote professional development in nursing
15. Eligible for cross appointment with McMaster University School of Nursing at the undergraduate and graduate level1. Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class RN(EC)
