The Student Nurse Extern (SNE) will perform clinical duties under the direction of a skilled Registered Nurse Preceptor, performs specific nursing functions of patient care to patients using the nursing process in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice. The SNE will have competencies completed through a competency checklist from their nursing program. Reports to: Registered Nurse Preceptor, Department Director, Chief Nursing Officer FLSA: Non-exempt *Under the supervision of the RN, the Student Nurse Extern II may:* SNE do not take a patient assignment, they are always partnered with an RN Preceptor. Perform procedures that are present on competency checklist from nursing school, i.e. IV insertion, foley insertion, dressing changes, etc. These are to be completed under the direction and visualization of RN Preceptor. Provide patient education and perform teach-back, under the supervision of RN Preceptor. Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient. Perform basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by the RN Preceptor, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements and recording intake and output. Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including but not limited to bathing, grooming, eating and ambulation. Participates in staff in-services and activities to contribute to the on-going development of knowledge and improve techniques. The SNE II will work in their chosen department but can be floated to other units during low volume or as needs arise in another unit. The SNE II is eligible for open positions within the department based on their performance. The candidate must complete an on-line application for employment. Once completion of accredited Registered Nurse program, the SNE II will remain in their level until they receive their NCLEX authorization to test.
