Position Summary:
The responsibilities of the research nurse are to work closely with the principal investigator and the study team to collect and document research data. In addition to providing and coordinating care, the research nurse has a central role in assuring participant recruitment, safety, data collection and follow-ups.
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor and in conjunction with physicians and other health-care providers, evaluates patient’s health, provides advice, health education, wellness information and mentoring. Provides advice and information and acts as a resource person on health-related matters.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Recruitment of patients and other research participants for ongoing studies, with a verification and screening of eligibility.
Liaising between the clinical and research team. Attending relevant team meetings. On-site presence whenever possible.
Establishes clinical priorities and enacts the appropriate course of action, including liaison and referral to medical staff and other health-care professionals/services within the institution and community at large. Ensures adjustment, coordination and follow up of such services
Evaluating, treating and/or referring patients to appropriate resources in the same day through an appointment at the clinic and/or to external resources (e.g. CLSC, ER, walk-in clinics). Assesses patient’s medical priority and condition (i.e., urgent, semi-urgent, non-urgent); provides support for health issues. Monitors and records vital signs, collecting relevant data and documenting in the patient chart.
Acts as a resource person for physical and mental health related matters. Implements referrals to dieticians, doctors, therapists, Wellness Advisors, Access Advisors, Dean of Students, OSVRSE, OSD, and other university resources. Participates in collaborative care model at McGill.
Responds to and assesses emergency situations and applies appropriate measures. Uses excellent clinical judgment and applies collective orders for the administration of oxygen, Epipen, Narcan and other emergency medications. Monitors patients experiencing urgent issues such as severe allergic reaction and acute chest pain and alerts the physician. Performs EKGs based on medical order. Administers cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and operates AED (defibrillator). Contacts emergency services and refers patients to the emergency room when necessary. Prepares patient for urgent transportation to hospital. Monitors patient’s health status while awaiting transportation.
Based on clinical assessment performs a variety of medical acts designated by Policies, Procedures and Collective Orders such as: writes requisitions and orders laboratory tests such as urine BHcG, rapid strep, urinalysis, fluid or wound cultures/PCR, blood work, testing and treatment of strep throat, etc.
Sees patients by appointment for non-urgent matters, i.e., Performs mental health and physical health assessments and follow-ups. Performs follow up to inform patients of test results or for patients who have been diagnosed and/or have on-going health issues as per physician’s orders, directives or collective orders. Provides liaison for patients with chronic medical conditions or abnormal test results. Ensures appropriate disposal of biohazardous materials.
In conjunction with the Nursing Manager, drafts changes to clinic practices based on PIQ/RAMQ/OIIQ/INESSS/INSPQ updates. Updates clinical nursing protocols. Drafts and updates nursing collective orders in collaboration with the Medical Lead and Nursing Manager. Stays up-to-date on notices from the Department de Santé Publique, Protocol D’Immunization de Quebec and international health guidelines and trends. Liaises with these groups. Maintains and updates database and files and processes documents related to activities of the unit. Recommends creative and innovative solutions to problems encountered and makes suggestions regarding work methods to improve efficiency of the workplace.
Organizes and researches training opportunities to broaden knowledge. Identifies knowledge gaps and participates in self-directed learning.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Undergraduate degree in Nursing
3 years of related experience
Current licensed OIIQ member in good standing
Basic Life Support certification
Proven discretion in dealing with confidential and/or sensitive information or situations. Assists all clients with a positive attitude, tact and diplomacy while maintaining a professional manner and competence at all times.
Demonstrated ability to explain protocols to patients and obtain informed consent.
Experience in a clinic environment with proven experience performing triage in a fast-paced clinic setting.
Experience in de-escalating high-risk / crisis situations, strongly preferred.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative, problem-solve and organize work within area of responsibility.
Must possess strong organizational skills with ability to multi-task and prioritize.
