Purpose:

 

Stewards Individual Placements is an AmeriCorps Program which provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural and cultural resources. Reconstruction Era National Historical Park interprets the story of the Reconstruction era in the United States using the events that took place around Beaufort, SC during and shortly after the Civil War as a case study and model for Reconstruction. The park consists of three sites in Beaufort County, each focusing on a different theme of Reconstruction. The park also manages the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network, which seeks to connect public facing sites and programs around the country that interpret Reconstruction in local communities.

 

The Visitor Services and Program Support AmeriCorps will serve as a member of the park's Visitor Services team with the division of interpretation. The AmeriCorps member will assist park staff in providing a range of services designed to foster meaningful connections to Reconstruction Era National Historical Park and its rich history. During the course of the internship, members will serve alongside experienced National Park Service employees supporting every facet of park operations such as visitor engagement, community outreach, and leading public facing interpretive programs about the region's Civil War and Reconstruction era history.

Description of Duties:

 

As an AmeriCorps Member serving with the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park in Beaufort, SC, your responsibilities will include:

 

Support interpretation and education activities such as formal and informal interpretations through robust program schedules.Assist with visitor engagement, including answering visitor inquiries and providing information.Develop and implement engaging outreach programs to connect visitors with the history of the site.Provide information to visitors related to basic orientation to the site and surrounding community.Facilitate guided tours and interactive activities that enhance visitor understanding and appreciation.Conduct walking tours in a small-town area for groups of up to 10-15 people.Support scheduling and coordination for events and volunteer activities.Serve with the park's education team to support field trips to the site.Facilitate information tables at community events, programs, and festivals located in Beaufort County.Collect and analyze visitor feedback to improve engagement strategies and visitor experience.Assist with the organization and maintenance of exhibits and displays.

 

Qualifications:

 

United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien. Between the ages of 18 – 30, or up to age 35 with Veteran status. Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.  Must have a valid Driver’s License. Ability to use Microsoft Office/Office365Must be able to lead walking tours of up to one mile on sidewalks and grassy terrain.Some college with an emphasis in American history, especially in topics associated with the Civil War and Reconstruction is preferred.Experience in customer service is desired.

Time Requirements:

 

Typically, this position is expected to serve 40 hours a week Tuesday to Saturday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps serviceThe member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.The member will serve fully in person on site.

 

Orientation and Training:

 

The member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.The member will receive extensive training and support for visitor services and interpretation, with opportunities to attend trainings organized at both the park and regional level.The member will receive training in the basic history of the Reconstruction era and its local impact.The member will receive training on how to interact with the public, lead and organize tours, assist with information tables, and facilitate community outreach.The member will have opportunities to serve across park divisions to gain additional experience related to facilities/maintenance, resource management, administration, and digital outreach. Opportunities exist to serve with community partners in Beaufort County as well.The member will have opportunities to attend a wide variety of local events and programs to get acquainted with the site.The member will receive NPS training as well as opportunities for advanced training through partner organizations such as the National Association for Interpretation.

Evaluation and Reporting:

 

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

 

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
