National Park Service Mission:

The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The NPS cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

National Park Service (NPS) - Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) Program Overview:

The NPS operates programs in communities throughout the nation to connect people across the country to their parks, trails, rivers, and other special places. This fellowship position is within the NPS- Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) program, which helps community groups, nonprofits, state and local governments, and tribes plan parks and trails, conserve and improve access to rivers and natural areas, and create recreation opportunities through locally led partnerships.

The NPS National Trails Office, DOI Regions 6,7 & 8 (NTIR- National Trails Intermountain Region) administers ten national historic trails that cross 24 states and over 29,000 miles of historic route.  NTIR manages a nation-wide program of partnerships, and interdisciplinary collaboration, where the NPS provides technical and limited financial assistance to federal, state, county, city, tribal, and private landowners, and works in partnership with non-profits, universities, other agencies and entities to protect, develop, and promote the national historic trails.  Our Strategic Plan mission is to promote connections with the National Historic Trails to engage and inspire all people.

NTIR is seeking the assistance of an intern to provide support to the office's partnership and outreach efforts. A central purpose of the National Trail System Act is to encourage and assist volunteer citizen involvement in the administration, planning, development, maintenance, and management of trails. It is through public and private partnerships with trail communities that we fulfill the core purpose of NHTs (National Historic Trails): protection, development, and promotion of NHTs for public use and enjoyment. Another important aspect of our partnership and outreach efforts includes consulting with tribes that have current and/or cultural connections with the trails with the goal of incorporating their perspectives into trail materials. The intern's work with staff and trail partners, including tribes, will help ensure that partner perspectives are incorporated and that partner requests for technical assistance from staff are documented and tracked.
