Purpose:

 

Stewards Individual Placements is an AmeriCorps Program which provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural and cultural resources. Fort Frederica National Monument conserves the town and fort of Frederica, established by General James Oglethorpe in 1736. The early colonial townsite was pivotal in the development of the colony of Georgia and played a crucial role in the War of Jenkins Ear. The Interpretation and Education team is responsible for overseeing visitor center operations, the development and execution of interpretative programming and events focused on the cultural and natural history of St. Simons Island and the larger Coastal Georgia region, and managing education groups.

 

The Interpretation and Education Intern is an AmeriCorps Position which will serve as a member of the park's interpretation and education team. The AmeriCorps member will assist park staff in providing a range of services designed to foster meaningful connections to Fort Frederica National Monument and its rich history. During the course of the internship, the member will serve alongside experienced National Park Service employees supporting every facet of park operations such as leading informal interpretive activities in the park, delivering existing education programs, implementing outdoor recreation Junior Ranger Angler programs, and developing new programs for various audiences.

Description of Duties:

 

As an AmeriCorps Member serving with the Fort Frederica National Monument in St. Simons Island, GA, your responsibilities will include:

 

Assist with the development and implementation of interpretive programming focused on the cultural and natural history of St. Simons Island, GA.Develop and present reoccurring interpretive programs that focus on the local history of Frederica.Assist with education programming, primarily 3rd-5th grade, focused on Georgia Colonial history and Archeology.Lead outdoor recreational programs geared toward introducing youth to outdoor activities, primarily through fishing.  Introduce local communities to outdoor recreational opportunities by assisting with the development of external partnerships and implementing Junior Angler programs.Provide informal program support and interact with visitors daily.

 

Qualifications:

 

United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien. Between the ages of 18 – 30, or up to age 35 with Veteran status. Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.  Must have a valid Driver’s License. High School diploma, GED or equivalent.Some college is preferred.Classes or experience in outdoor recreation are desired.

Time Requirements:

 

Typically, this position is expected to serve 40 hours a week Tuesday to Saturday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps serviceThe member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.The member will serve fully in person on site.

 

Orientation and Training:

 

The member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.The member will receive in-field and online training to support the development and presentation of at least one reoccurring interpretive program.The member will receive on-site training for safety, vehicle use, interpretative programming, living history, and fishing equipment useThe member will receive cross-training at Cumberland Island National Seashore to possibly include overnight or nighttime programming.

Evaluation and Reporting:

 

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

 

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
