Purpose:

 

Stewards Individual Placements is an AmeriCorps Program which provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural and cultural resources. Moores Creek National Battlefield is the site of the first decisive Patriot victory of the American Revolution. This battle, fought February 27, 1776, helped North Carolina seek out and vote on independence, the first American colony to do so. This coming February will mark the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. Moores Creek National Battlefield is seeking an intern in the Interpretation and Education Division to provide hands-on experience in public history, event planning, and visitor engagement while supporting the park’s efforts to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge, scheduled for February 26–28, 2026.

 

The America 250 Intern is an AmeriCorps Position which will serve as a member of the park's interpretation and education team. The AmeriCorps member will assist park staff in providing a range of services designed to foster meaningful connections to Moores Creek National Battlefield and its rich history. During the course of the internship, the member will serve alongside experienced National Park Service employees supporting every facet of park operations such as leading informal interpretive activities in the park, delivering existing education programs, and developing new programs for various audiences. The member will help to finalize planning for the park's 250th anniversary event in February 2026 in addition to other responsibilities within the division. The member will grow in their knowledge of interpretation, education, volunteers, and complex event planning. This position is designed to help the member grow professionally and deepen their understanding of the National Park Service mission and the role of interpretation in public lands stewardship.

Description of Duties:

 

As an AmeriCorps Member serving with the Moores Creek National Battlefield in Currie, NC, your responsibilities will include:

 

Assist with ongoing planning efforts for the 250th anniversary event.Support the implementation and logistics of the event in February 2026.Coordinate with stakeholders and partner organizations to ensure timely communication and collaboration.Help design and distribute marketing materials, including flyers and other promotional items, to engage the local community and surrounding counties.Provide guided tours and living history programs to enhance visitor understanding of the park's significance.Offer informal interpretation to park visitors, as well as information and orientation.Assist in the development of educational materials and interpretive programs as needed.Assist in the creation of interpretive media such as brochures, exhibit panels, digital content, and social media posts.Contribute creative ideas for storytelling and visual design that support the park’s interpretive themes and goals.

 

Qualifications:

 

United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien. Between the ages of 18 – 30, or up to age 35 with Veteran status. Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.  Must have a valid Driver’s License. Bachelor's degree is preferred.Experience with social media development and public speaking are desired.

Time Requirements:

 

Typically, this position is expected to serve 40 hours a week Tuesday to Saturday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps serviceThe member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.The member will serve fully in person on site.

 

Orientation and Training:

 

The member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.The member will receive hands-on training from the Chief of Interpretation. This training will include customer service, complex event planning and informal visitor contacts.The member will be introduced to all stakeholders involved in the planning and execution of the event by the Chief of Interpretation.The member will receive formal interpretive talk training from the Visitor Services Lead to provide high quality guided tours for the public.The member will shadow experienced park interpreters and receive hands-on assistance in the development of interpretive programs.The member will receive audience-centered experience training as well as Foundations of Interpretation training.The member will complete IT training to utilize park computers including the use of Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, InDesign, and the Microsoft suite to develop local interpretive media.The member will also participate in hands-on online training in interpretive media development with the Chief of Interpretation and social media and interpretation training from the park's Social Media coordinator.

Evaluation and Reporting:

 

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

 

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
