Hourly base pay rate is $28.65 - $42.98/hour. The hourly base rate may vary within the anticipated range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include commission (annual, monthly, etc.) and/or an incentive program.

The AJC is seeking a dedicated and proactive Weekend General Assignment Reporter to join our editorial team. This position is designed for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, digital-first environment and is passionate about local journalism. This role offers a flexible, permanent 4-day work week, including Saturdays and Sundays, with two additional days determined based on newsroom needs.

The reporter will play a pivotal role in planning and executing weekend coverage, ensuring AJC.com starts each Monday with compelling and timely digital content. This role reports directly to the Weekend Editor on Saturdays and Sundays and is aligned with the Crime and Public Safety/Breaking News teams throughout the week.

Please note, this role is based in Atlanta, GA.

Beat Overview This is a general assignment role focused on quick-turn daily and enterprise reporting. It emphasizes weekend news coverage but also contributes across beats as needed, including breaking news and public safety. The reporter will be expected to identify strong enterprise opportunities while maintaining the flexibility to respond to urgent news events.

Key Responsibilities

· Plan and execute coverage of key weekend news events

· Identify and pursue weekend enterprise stories that resonate with Atlanta-area readers

· Respond quickly to breaking news as needed, delivering clean, accurate, publish-ready copy

· Report independently, often remotely, with a strong sense of urgency and responsibility

· Collaborate across the newsroom, including with photo, video, and digital programming teams

· Take photos and/or videos in breaking news situations when visual teams are unavailable

· Contribute to weekday coverage and support related editorial initiatives

· Help ensure the AJC’s weekend digital report is sharp, timely, and engaging

· Pitch and develop story ideas that align with newsroom priorities

· Maintain ethical and journalistic standards consistent with AJC policies

Required Qualifications

· Education: Bachelor's degree and at least 2+ years of professional journalism experience, or Master’s degree with 1+ years, or at least 6 years of relevant experience without a degree.

· Demonstrated strong news judgment and writing ability

· Ability to work independently, multitask effectively, and meet tight deadlines

· Comfort using newsroom tools and filing remotely as needed

· Experience collaborating across newsroom functions (e.g., visuals, audience, digital)

· Willingness and ability to work weekends and off hours as dictated by the news cycle

· Reliable transportation and access to high-speed home internet

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience covering breaking news or public safety

· Familiarity with CMS systems, SEO, and digital publishing best practices

· Basic photography and video capture/editing skills

· Knowledge of the Atlanta area and its communities

Employees are eligible to receive a minimum of sixteen hours of paid time off every month and seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year.
