Job Summary/Description:

WYMT, the Gray Media-owned CBS affiliate in Hazard, Kentucky, is searching for a motivated and people-oriented leader to serve as its next news director. WYMT serves a subset of the Lexington DMA plus adjacent areas and is an extension of market-leader WKYT.

Our ideal candidate is a collaborative and innovative news leader who has strong teaching and coaching skills; a passion to produce and showcase content with an innovative approach to delivering content across all platforms; and is passionate about the unique area and role that WYMT serves. The news director will lead day-to-day editorial decision-making and staff development while working closely with WKYT's news director and general manager on strategic planning and execution.

Duties/Responsibilities (but not limited to) the following:

• Work closely with producers, reporters, and anchors on producing compelling, impact-driven storytelling and daily news coverage
• Oversee production of newscasts, special programming, and streaming coverage
• Strong working knowledge of community issues and their importance in the region by building strong relationships with news sources and community stakeholders
• Maintain editorial standards and goals for content through valuable feedback and building a strong culture through teaching, coaching, and leading
• Strategize with WKYT's executive team on goals focused on growing staff, content across all platforms, and audience
• Innovate to deliver original, strategic content across all platforms with specific digital targets
• Prepare and manage department budget

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field, and news leadership experience
• Journalistic and content judgment that emphasizes accuracy, community engagement, and building trust with the audience
• Excellent people management skills that include strong communication and organizational skills in a deadline-driven environment
• Strong working knowledge of the unique local community that WYMT serves, while also understanding the entire DMA
