What's the role?

We are looking for an energetic and passionate newsroom leader who wants to take their career to the next level.

Our reporters are embedded in the communities they serve and need an engaged manager to provide digital news leadership, mentoring and coaching. 

The Cairns Post and Weekend Post have a long and proud tradition of covering the whole Far North Queensland region, from Cardwell to Cape York and west to the Tablelands - a massive patch. 

In your role as News Director, you will help build on our current strengths. If you have a strong news sense, with good editing skills, a strong understanding of digital reporting and social media engagement, we want to hear from you. 

About the role:

Work closely with the Editor and Head of Content in the editorial leadership team to source and deliver compelling news content for online and print

Set the daily news agenda for the region

Use analytics to identify trending topics, news stories, ideas and innovations

Understand and focus on the importance of community news within the media landscape

Increase social media following and engagement

Develop strategies to ensure our digital journalism leads the way and drives consumer growth

Commercially minded, you will form part of the leadership team that makes key business decisions to shape the way the Cairns Post and Weekend Post grow and transform

Use your editorial skill sets to ensure high-quality content is published across all platforms and publications

Who are you?

Ideal candidate will come from a news background 

Strong understanding of what makes a great yarn and what digital and print audiences want 

Strong understanding of SEO, social media and what it takes to run a news website

Strong organisational skills in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment 

Strong people management skills and an interpersonal skill set
