Indiana Michigan Power/AEP is currently recruiting for underground electric utility line crew employees to join our team in the South Bend, IN market.

Job Description

The below job description reflects responsibilities performed in an entry level role (Network Mechanic-D).  Additional responsibilities and requirements are needed for higher levels (Network Mechanic C-A).

What you’ll do:

Entry level Network Mechanics assist with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal and inspection of underground transmission and distribution facilities. Drive and operate line trucks and associated auxiliary equipment.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

During the first six months in this classification, the employee must demonstrate the ability to operate Company equipment and work in enclosed spaces on de-energized conductors and equipment. After six months in this classification, under direct supervision, may work on conductors and equipment energized at voltages up to 260 volts.Work from bucket trucks or on ladders and below ground within enclosed spaces (vaults and manholes), along with proper set up of barricades, operation of atmospheric monitoring test equipment, and ventilation blowers.Learn and demonstrate the required skills to personal rescue from both bucket trucks and enclosed spaces.Become familiar with the components that make-up URD primary cable.Set up and operate cable-stripping tools.Learn and install (URD) stress cone, primary cable splice, and outdoor termination.Become familiar with the use and care of insulating rubber gloves, sleeves and other personal protective equipment and identify the types of grounding cables utilized for personal protective grounding.Become familiar with the identification of primary and secondary cable types, sizes and voltage ratings.Develop knowledge of Series and Parallel Circuits, Ohms Law, and Electron Flow.Learn and understand hand signals for mobile cranes, derricks, and winch lines.Install, maintain and remove street lighting equipment.Set and remove barricades, power units, flags, signs and flares, direct pedestrian traffic.Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.Attend and participate in training as assigned.

What we’re looking for:

Education:

High school diploma or GED.

Experience:

Entry level Network Mechanic D:

No experience required.  Line work experience or line school education is preferred.

Network Mechanic C:

Minimum of one year distribution electrical power line work experience, OR one year of related line experience defined as:  successful completion of a one year electrical power line school certificate plus a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience, or an Associate degree from an electrical power line school which includes a minimum of 16 weeks internship or distribution electrical power line experience.

Network Mechanic B:

Shall have performed the duties of and have all the qualifications of Network Mechanic C (minimum of 2 years) or the equivalent and shall qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company. 

Network Mechanic A:

Shall have performed the duties of and have all the qualifications of Network Mechanic B (minimum of 2 years) or the equivalent and shall qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company. 

Licenses/Certifications:

Network Mechanic D:

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Employee shall obtain appropriate licensing as required by federal and/or state law prior to the end of the designated probationary period. Must acquire CDL beginners permit within 60 days.

Network Mechanic C-A:

Valid Class A CDL is required

Other requirements for Network Mechanic candidates:

Must be able to distinguish colors on a standard color blindness test. Must have the ability to deal with employees, customers and the general public in a courteous and proper manner. Must acquire within such time frame as determined by the Company, the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher classification in the line of progression or vacate the current job classification.This job requires "recommended" test results from HireVue Line Worker Virtual Job Tryout.  This assessment is completed online, is untimed, and typically takes about 45 minutes to complete. Compensation Range:

$26.55-27.23 USD

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: H – Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
