Job Title: Natural Language Processing (NLP) Specialist
Location: Overland Park, KS
Role Overview:
We are looking for an experienced NLP/NLU Specialist to join our AI team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Natural Language Understanding, particularly in building, deploying, and optimizing NLU models for tasks such as intent classification, entity recognition, and data labeling. This role requires hands-on expertise in data annotation, fine-tuning, and an iterative approach to model improvement. Experience in conversational AI and virtual assistant development, as well as proficiency with large language models (LLMs), is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, build, and optimize NLU models for intent classification, entity extraction, and related tasks
Lead and manage data labeling and annotation projects, including guideline development and quality control
Fine-tune and adapt pre-trained language models to specific business domains and use cases
Analyze NLU model outputs and conduct error analysis for continuous performance improvement
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, product, QA) to deploy and monitor NLU models in production
Implement best practices for dataset management, annotation, and labeling workflows
Leverage LLMs and state-of-the-art NLP technologies to enhance conversational AI solutions and virtual assistants
Contribute to innovation in conversational interfaces by integrating advanced NLU/NLP components
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Linguistics, or related field
4+ years of hands-on experience in NLU/NLP development (intent classification, entity recognition, data annotation)
Proficiency in building and deploying language models using Python and frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, spaCy, or Hugging Face
Demonstrated expertise in data labeling, annotation tools, and best practices for dataset curation
Strong background in fine-tuning LLMs for specific use cases and business domains
Proven ability to iteratively improve NLU accuracy through testing and error analysis
Experience with conversational AI or virtual assistant technologies (e.g., Dialogflow, Rasa, Gemini, Alexa, Microsoft Bot Framework)
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with multilingual NLP/NLU systems
Familiarity with cloud-based AI platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
Prior work in a consulting or client-facing environment

The base salary range for this position is $91,457 - $137,186, plus incentives that align with individual and company performance. Actual salaries will vary based on work location, qualifications, skills, education, experience, and competencies. Benefits available to eligible employees in this role include medical, dental, and vision insurance, comprehensive employee assistance program, 401(k) retirement plan, paid time off and holidays.
