Employment Category Regular Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 20 hours per week) Microbiologist 1 position for the Department of Microbiology at Oregon State University ( OSU ). This position supports microbiology laboratory courses. The incumbent will prepare reagents and materials needed for laboratory courses that involve the growth of bacteria, parasites, viruses, and tissue culture cells. Incumbent will monitor the growth and needed maintenance of microbial cultures. Additional duties include lab operations, ordering, and inventory maintenance of supplies. The position also involves cleaning and sterilizing glassware and other items after laboratory classes. The person will interact and collaborate daily with academic faculty, staff, and students. The Department of Microbiology, staffed by about 20 faculty and three instructors, trains about one thousand undergraduate majors and 35 graduate students. Research interests encompass studies on the biology and pathogenesis of viruses and bacteria, microbial ecology and evolution, and environmental microbiology. Key Responsibilities 35% + Efficient operation of the microbiology media laboratory, which is responsible for the mass production of all types of growth media and solutions used in undergraduate teaching laboratories. + Aseptically prepare large quantities of petri plates, agar/broth culture tubes, and chemical solutions, as required and regardless of unexpected events. + Timely consultation with teaching faculty regarding the preparation of media and materials for courses. 30% + Order and maintain the inventory of disposable supplies, small equipment, growth media, and chemicals needed for teaching purposes + Sterilize and wash used glassware from the teaching labs and media prep. + Autoclaving of lab biohazardous waste, collecting and disposing of all hazardous waste according to OSU Environmental Health and Safety requirements. 25% + Growth and maintenance of microbial cultures for the teaching program. This will include providing cultures upon request for laboratory courses and ensuring that they are pure. 5% + Assist with keeping the teaching laboratories in functional order by assisting with maintenance and coordinating with facilities for repairs as needed. 5% + Special projects as warranted + Ongoing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in everyday work What We Require A Bachelor’s degree with advanced courses in Bacteriology, Chemistry, and/or other biological fields which shows knowledge of microbiology theory, principles, and practices and laboratory procedures, equipment, and instruments; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience. What We Would Like You to Have + Experience working aseptically with bacterial and other microbial cultures. + Experience in preparing media and solutions on a large scale + Demonstrated ability to store and maintain pure microbial culture stocks after repeated culturing. + Experience using chemical molecular weights and equations to make accurate calculations. + Demonstrated ability to successfully organize and execute multiple projects simultaneously. Working Conditions / Work Schedule Lab Environment Potential exposure to BSL -1 organisms and hazardous chemicals. Routine use of autoclaves (possible steam exposure). The incumbent may occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. and routinely stand for extended periods of time.
