The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment. Through our partnerships across the university and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, we use a blended service model to meet the needs of our community and exceed expectations.

Job Summary

Michigan Medicine Security (MMS) is seeking a Security Officer for an assignment as a K9 Officer for Hospital Security canines. The canines will be used for animal-assisted therapy and explosives detection. Michigan Medicine Security is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Work schedules may include nights, weekends, afternoons, holidays, and occasional unanticipated overtime. This is a uniform position following the DPSS uniform dress code. There will be stationary and mobile patrol responsibilities within an 8-hour (minimum) shift.

Expectations for K9 Officers

You will be expected to make a minimum commitment of four (4) years to the Security K9 programThe K9 Program supervisor will inspect the applicant?s home to ensure the home environment is suitable for a security canineYou will be required to properly care for and house the canine inside your home, including but not limited to veterinary care and grooming (at no cost to you)All persons and animals in the home environment must be capable of interacting safely with the canineA home environment with outdoor space that is or can be fenced in is preferredYou must abide by a training schedule and must train the canine in a manner consistent with the direction of the chosen trainer/training facilityApplicant is expected to move and control an 80 LB canine, and routinely traverse three miles throughout a shift

Assignment Provisions 

The selected K9 handlers will be provided with the necessary training, including: 

Hospital Security K9 Training Obedience Explosives Detection Community Engagement MMS will fund the cost of installing fencing for an enclosure up to but not exceeding 1,000 square feet at the selected K9 handler's yard at home if the selected handler's yard is conducive to fencing but does not have fencing. MMS will fund the canine's veterinary care, food, training, and training equipment. MMS will provide marked Security K9 vehicles and fuel for the handlers use for work and training purposes. The K9 handlers will be eligible for overtime as identified in the current union contract. Arrangements can/will be made for the applicant to complete a ride-along with a UMPD K9 Officer and visit the K9 academy, where they will train if they wish to do so. Required Qualifications*

High school or GED equivalent and 1 year of security, fire, military, customer service, or emergency managementWilling to be trained and meet the criteria for a K9 handler Experience with the enforcement of fire, safety, and security practices Skillset in handling emergencies and using associated equipment Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic keyboarding Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Excellent verbal de-escalation skills Willingness to primarily work afternoon shifts in Adult Emergency Services Willingness to be flexible with schedule changes with little notice Prior experience with domestic canines is preferred Additional Information

All members of the DPSS team are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report any Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees must also complete the Clery Compliance training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union which contains and settles all matters concerning wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
