The Opportunity
The Railway Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of railway vehicles, equipment, and systems. This includes locomotives, passenger coaches, freight cars, and other rail-related mechanical systems. The role ensures all work is performed in compliance with safety regulations, company standards, and applicable transportation laws.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Perform scheduled maintenance and inspections on railcars and locomotives.Diagnose mechanical issues and determine corrective action.Conduct repairs on engines, brakes, couplings, suspensions, HVAC, and other mechanical systems.Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify faults in mechanical components.Replace worn or defective parts using appropriate tools and methods.Perform welding, cutting, grinding, and other fabrication work when required.Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance work, and parts used.Ensure all work complies with safety standards and railway regulationsCollaborate with other maintenance staff, and supervisors to resolve issues.Respond to emergency repairs or on-track breakdowns when necessary.Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored.? Accurately document all maintenance, inspections, and repairs using computer-based systems.? Enter parts usage, work orders, fault codes, and inspection results into digital maintenance management software (CMMS).Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or apprenticeship in mechanics preferred.Minimum 2–5 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, preferably in a rail, heavy equipment, or industrial setting.Knowledge of railway systems, mechanical assemblies, and regulatory standards is a plus.Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic instruments.Welding and fabrication experience is an asset.Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Willingness to work outdoors, in all weather conditions, and on rotating shifts if required.Physical fitness and ability to lift heavy parts and perform manual labor.Working Conditions:
Work is typically performed in a rail yard environment.Exposure to loud noises, grease, oil, and moving machinery.May require travel to remote locations for field repairs.Licensing/Certifications (Optional/Preferred):
