Merchant Credit Risk Manager

JOB BRIEF

As the Credit Risk Manager, Payments Risk, you will be part of the Commercial Bank 1st line of defense Risk team supporting the KeyBank Merchant Services (KMS) acquiring business, ensuring appropriate oversight of onboarding and risk of the merchant portfolio.

Reporting directly to the Senior KMS Risk Manager, you will join a group of dedicated credit risk professionals focused on the day-to-day merchant risk functions. Leveraging your experience in merchant credit risk, you will act as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert, leading the team in ensuring adherence to KeyBank’s underwriting guidelines and identifying areas of potential exposure and developing effective risk mitigation strategies.

By fostering a culture of excellence and accountability within your team, you will ensure that all credit risk activities are executed to the highest professional standards. This includes mentoring and developing staff, promoting continuous improvement, and advancing the team’s technical capabilities. Your leadership will be crucial in supporting the growth objectives of KeyBank Merchant Services while safeguarding the institution’s assets and reputation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Manage a team of Credit Risk Analysts with an eye toward operational efficiency and continuous improvement

Oversee and monitor the daily concurrence requests vendors on new merchant applications and assess decisions, funding holds, releases, risk reviews and investigations according to approved guidelines.

Supervise the monitoring of suspended transactions, providing guidance on escalation, remediation, and stakeholder communication

Respond to escalated inquiries from leadership regarding complex applications and emerging business opportunities

Monitor communication with leadership including coordination of periodic reviews and investigations, while ensuring alignment across internal teams

Establish and manage relationships with external vendors for collection placements, fostering collaboration and driving performance improvement

Actively contribute to oversight meetings with risk, compliance, and executive partners, driving strategic risk management initiatives

Provide direction and support for Third Party governance processes and due diligence activities related to KMS Vendors

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

Experience: minimum 5-7 Years Merchant acquiring credit and risk management  

Understanding of merchant risk, fraud indicators and risk mitigation practices

Ability to analyze merchant account details and provide recommendations based on credit underwriting guidelines.

Knowledge of merchant boarding systems and processes

Experience in Excel with the ability to manage data sets, create summary views using pivot tables, data graphs/visualizations

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Strong attention to detail, quality, speed and accuracy

Strong work ethic and positive attitude

Ability to multitask and work well under pressure

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience running and operational team

Experience managing card brand compliance

Experience creating and managing operational controls and procedure

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This position is eligible to earn a base salary in the range of $110,000 to $135,000 annually depending on location and job-related factors such as level of experience. Compensation for this role also includes eligibility for short-term incentive compensation and deferred incentive compensation subject to individual and company performance.
