Summary This position is located in the Laboratory Department at Pine Ridge Service Unit, Pine Ridge, SD. The purpose of this position is to perform medical support assistant duties, manage the appointment system, serve as receptionist, assist with clerical and medical support service duties to provide efficient services to clients, visitors, and other health care providers and some phlebotomy duties. Answers the telephone, utilizes electronic system to schedule patient appointments, faxes results to ordering providers, and other clerical duties Coordinate patient care based on medical provider orders Collects and records clinical data from medical and laboratory professionals Supports and adheres to hospital and laboratory service policies and procedures and maintains record confidentiality and safeguard medical information. There is some walking within the facility to accomplish tasks. When performing phlebotomy duties, the work requires regular and recurrent standing, walking, and bending. Employee is required to adhere to proper body mechanics while on duty. The work requires the ability to function in stressful situations and the ability to display physical/emotional control or defend oneself against emotionally ill or combative patients. Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. After you begin your employment, your continued employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of your position. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate the following education and/or experience as outlined below for the grade level(s) you are applying to. Any specialized experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the tasks as identified. GS-04: One year of general experience. General Experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. OR Completion of two years education above high school. OR A combination of education and experience as listed above, that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for the position. GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service. Examples Include: Assist patients with making appointments, interview patients to gather information, enter patient data into an electronic health record, assist patients in completing forms, review documents for accuracy, explain processes and policies to patients, initiate health records and admission forms. OR Completion of four years education above high school. OR A combination of education and experience as listed above, that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for the position. GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Examples Include: knowledge of the appointment system, ability to coordinate patient care based on medical provider referral for laboratory services, assist with collection of medical samples for laboratory testing. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements by the cut-off date for application review. Education You may qualify for the GS-04 and GS-05 grade levels with education. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. At least a 6 month service agreement will be required. This position has promotion potential to the GS-6 grade level.
