Medical Research Advisor I - BPDRP

Summary: The Medical Research Advisor I will support NAMRU EURAFCENT's Bacterial and Parasitic Disease Research Program (BPDRP) by assisting in the development, coordination, and execution of field and laboratory research related to emerging infectious diseases. This role plays a critical part in NAMRU’s global health mission, focusing on infectious disease surveillance and research in Africa, Europe, and Asia. The work under this contract will be performed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit EURAFCENT offices in Cairo, Egypt, or at other designated locations in special circumstances. Responsibilities Essential Job Functions: Assist in the design and implementation of research protocols and projects on infectious diseases, subject to Government approval. Lead or contribute to the drafting of proposals, research protocols, and study documentation, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations. Conduct or supervise sample and specimen collection in both field and clinical environments (e.g., blood draws, nasal swabs). Perform or oversee laboratory analysis, including molecular diagnostics and assay development. Conduct clinical testing and contribute to lab-based evaluations and validations. Develop and maintain secure data repositories, ensuring proper documentation, curation, and access controls. Perform epidemiological analysis based on field and laboratory data. Promote and uphold health and safety protocols for all personnel engaged in research activities (e.g., vaccinations, physical exams, lab safety). Qualifications Necessary Skills and Knowledge: Proficient in writing protocols and manuscripts Extensive knowledge of research ethics and more than 15 years of experience in research ethics work. Minimum Qualifications: PhD or equivalent degrees e.g., Medical Doctorate. Fluent in written and spoken Arabic and English (level V (as defined by the U.S. Department of State)); French is an asset. Experience in providing training workshops in the languages mentioned is required. More than 15 years of experience in conducting clinical trials and surveillance studies: Working with US government and international entities Working with African and Middle East investigators Conducting training of field staff Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
