Employment Category Regular Job Summary This recruitment will be used to fill two full-time Medical Laboratory Technologist positions for the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory within the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University ( OSU ). The Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine provides professional and graduate programs for veterinary students, operates a Large and a Small Animal Teaching Hospital and the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The College operates within a total budget of approximately $16 million annually which supports educational programs, veterinary medical and diagnostic public services, and research programs with broad impacts related to animal and human health. The College employs approximately 150 faculty and staff, plus student workers. The Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is an integral part of the College of Veterinary Medicine and provides diagnostic services for the College, practicing veterinarians in the state and region, wildlife officials and livestock, poultry and pet owners. The purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of complex clinical laboratory testing in direct support of the Teaching hospitals, veterinarians, researchers, and clients around the world. This position supports diagnostic medicine and research by performing sample analysis including hematologic, biochemical, hemostatic, cytologic, and immunochemical assays on specimens. The incumbent will help in maintaining quality control for all instruments and procedures, develop, optimize, implement new testing procedures, and participate in training veterinary students, house officers, and residents. Key Responsibilities 65%Prepares and prioritizes specimens for analysis in the clinical pathology laboratory. Performs a wide variety of laboratory tests, including hematologic, biochemical, hemostatic, cytologic, and immunologic assays. Uses instruments such as automated hematology, coagulation, and chemistry analyzers. Performs microscopic work such as manual differentials and urinalysis. Verifies, enters, and checks laboratory results using the laboratory management data program. Interprets and correlates test results. Communicates test results to veterinarians and students via person, telephone, written report, and computer. Develops, optimizes, and implements new testing procedures when needed. 20%Operates all instruments used in diagnostic testing. Maintains quality control programs for all instruments and assays. Runs quality control programs and calibrates laboratory equipment on a regular schedule and ad hoc basis. Runs quality control checks on calibrated equipment by checking test results against standards to monitor accuracy of machine results. Cleans and makes minor repairs to equipment such as lubricating fittings, cleaning components, changing reagents, flushing lines and tubing, and replacing worn tubing, small parts, etc. Schedules non-routine maintenance and repairs with equipment vendor and/or specialized repair services. Tracks all maintenance activities. 10%Helps keep laboratory records, orders and maintains supplies and equipment inventories, and performs miscellaneous cleaning and disinfection duties. Monitors quality control activities of the laboratory to determine conformance with authorized policies and procedures and with sound practice; makes appropriate recommendations for correction and improvement as may be necessary. Seeks out and evaluates new ideas and current developments in the field of quality control and recommends for their application wherever advisable. 5%Trains Clinical Pathology students, house officers, and residents in laboratory test procedures, theories, and principles, use and maintenance of equipment, and reviews their work. Contribute to a safe, respectful, and professional work environment, provide constructive feedback throughout training, and support opportunities for growth and development of students, house officers, and residents. Performs other supporting tasks as necessary. What We Require A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology; OR a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Microbiology plus one year of experience in a clinical laboratory performing a variety of standard testing and examination procedures under general supervision in support of professional medical laboratory personnel; OR two years of experience equivalent to a Medical Laboratory Technician 2 in a clinical laboratory performing a variety of standard testing and examination procedures under general supervision in support of professional medical laboratory personnel. What You Will Need + Familiar with automated instrumentation such as hematology, coagulation, and chemistry analyzers. + Experience doing microscopic work such as differentials and urinalysis. + Must demonstrate excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities. + Demonstrated ability to work productively and cooperatively in teams and to communicate respectfully and professionally with a wide variety of individuals. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. What We Would Like You to Have + Completion of a three-to-four-year accredited program in Medical Technology followed by a specialized one year internship through a recognized school, and have acceptable performance in the laboratory exam through ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) or NCA (National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel). AMT accreditation (American Medical Technologists) may be considered. + Experience with veterinary laboratory medicine. Working Conditions / Work Schedule This position entails a full-time (1.0 FTE ) schedule, Monday-Friday (specific days may vary), with all shifts to be between 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
