Mechanical Piping Designer

Many of the world’s top engineers and scientists come together in our Water business because they view a community’s interaction with water a bit differently—as a single holistic system, rather than unconnected networks divided by jurisdictional boundaries. Working throughout the hydrologic cycle, we are delivering sustainable solutions to make sure water is where it should be and available when needed. Our experts guide our work with scientific rigor, an innovative spirit, and a vision for growth. Every day, we help communities improve, reuse, and protect this precious resource for future generations. Grow with us, H2O+U.

Your Opportunity

As a Mechanical Piping Designer, you will work with minimal guidance and direction on tasks for smaller projects, and as a team member of a larger project under the guidance of a Senior Designer.  You will participate in the design and layout of piping and pumping systems for our water projects, while understanding how your design is governed by applicable codes and engineering standards / practices.

Your Key Responsibilities

•    Performs 3D layout and design utilizing AutoCAD Plant 3D software.
•    Performs 2D layout and design of piping & instrumentation drawings (P&IDs) utilizing AutoCAD Plant 3D P&ID software.
•    Perform a designer role in the process mechanical field of water treatment, utilizing knowledge and experience of piping, pipe routing, and equipment layout and access to build and coordinate 3D models with a team of designers.
•    Generate and review pipe spool or pipe isometric drawings from the 3D model.
•    Work with other trades such as architectural, building mechanical, civil, electrical, and structural to deliver a coordinated and engineered 3D model to our clients.
•    Integrate and clash coordinate between 3D content created in AutoCAD and Revit within Navisworks software.
•    Conducts basic interpretations of drawings, codes, and other similar materials that are relevant to the equipment and piping design.
•    Review third-party drawings to determine specific design details required to complete the 3D design.
•    Performs basic calculations to analyze and design individual piping system components using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software.
•    General understanding of hydraulics and how piping systems affect fluid flow.
•    Assists with engineering duties on projects of various complexity where relevant to the 3D equipment and piping design.
•    Performs other duties as assigned by the senior designer staff.
•    Works on multiple projects.
•    Work in the field to gain experience with built systems and coordinate the 3D design with the real world.
•    Utilize information captured within point clouds to inform the 3D design.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

•    Requisite knowledge, interpretation, and application of relevant codes, standards, design guidelines, association manuals of practice, and applicable energy codes.
•    Strong understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
•    Strong knowledge of process mechanical systems, hydraulics, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
•    Checks the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manages time to meet project budget and schedule.
•    Participates and collaborates in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
•    Good oral and written communication skills
•    Strong presentation and interview skills.
•    Effective communicator and able to work on and lead teams.
•    Efficient project management of multiple concurrent projects.
•    Advanced understanding of AutoCAD and proficiency in using it as a drafting/design tool.
•    Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
•    Ability to take direction, follow process and accept feedback and suggestions from Senior Designers and Engineers.
•    Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite including excel and SharePoint, AutoCAD Plant 3D (or similar AutoCAD based piping and equipment program), Navisworks, BIM360/ACC (Autodesk Construction Cloud).
•    Advanced understanding of interfacing with point clouds and use of Cintoo for point cloud hosting.
•    Basic understanding of how Revit and Bentley products interact with and contribute 3D content to AutoCAD designs a bonus.

Education and Experience

Experience 3D modeling using a CAD based software.   Minimum of 5 years of experience.   Mechanically inclined, or interest in Process Mechanical concepts such as equipment, piping, pumps, industrial settings, chemical processing, etc. preferred.  Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
