Mechanical Designer (4-month Contract)

De Beers Technology has operations in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa and is part of the De Beers Group. We deliver technical services and technology systems to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the De Beers Diamond value chain from exploration to diamond recovery. Activities include marine geophysical survey, sampling, mining, projects, engineering, technology development and maintenance. We provide specialized diamond processing and recovery technology for the De Beers Group Exploration and Mining Operations. We are the industry leader in marine mining practices resulting in the most successful and advanced marine mining equipment and operations globally.  

The Company has an excellent record in successful project delivery which with over 140 projects delivered in the last 22 years focused on the establishment and development of a fleet of sampling and mining ships and all associated equipment. On the base of this successful track record, we have a strategic intention to expand our project offering to De Beers land-based operations.

Job Description

This role reports into the Advanced Technology Automation Department

Your role will include:

To provide CAD expertise to the R&D function in the form of conceptual, preliminary and detailed parametric 3D model designs and associated manufacturing detail drawings in accordance with De Beers Technologies standards and procedures.To support the design team with the assembly of prototypesDeliver detailed 3D parametric models of product/machine designs and the associated manufacturing dataProvide mechanical engineering expertise during the design processProvide innovative, cost-effective mechanical design solutions in response to technical challengesMaintain excellent world class housekeeping standards that fosters a safe working environment for allStrict adherence to all internal HSE policies and procedures as well as all legal regulations/requirements.Assembly and setup of prototypesResponsible for technical performance of a sub-system/productExecutes tasks assigned by engineers and tech leadSolves problems from existing knowledge or by reading up and generating new knowledge

Qualifications

Formal qualifications:

Engineering Drawing Diploma or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

Additional requirements:

3 - 5 years product/machine design experienceCREO or any drawing other CAD software detailing experienceComputer LiteracyEffective communication skills in English (written and verbal)Hands-on practical experience would be advantageousInternational travel may be required Police clearance is requiredRegistration as a radiation worker may be required.

Knowledge and Skills:

Technical

CAD software experience ideally in CREO with the Windchill product lifecycle management environmentMechanical engineering design skillsKnowledge of manufacturing processesMulti-discipline interface knowledge (specifically to electronics, electrical and C&I)Knowledge of configuration management principles would be advantageous,Suggest improvements on designs

Communication

Able to seek clarity on requirementsClear, logical presentations, reports, verbal.Technical detail communications with technical peers.Interact across tech functions e.g. tech dev, tech support, manufacturing

Management

Making and carrying out project plans for own work.Manage own time and delivery to meet project requirements.Comfortable with Peer Review of work (providing and receiving).Contributes to Mechanical discipline standards, strategies, processes and procedures and Community of PracticeSupervision / oversight of work is required

Financial

Obtaining quotations.Interacting with established suppliers for standard items.Interacting with new suppliers to assess applicability of new items/components.
