Materials Data Innovator

WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH

The Materials Data Innovator is within the Advanced Innovation Collective (AIC) at NIKE.  As a Material Innovator within NXT Apparel Materials, you will work cross-functionally with the NIKE Apparel Lab (NAL), NIKE Sports Research Lab (NSRL), and project teams across innovation and the Apparel business. 

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a specialist in textile engineering/science and fabric creation technologies used in the creation of sport performance applications. The ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of apparel materials performances and its application in sport and lifestyle. They are passionate about data science, digital tools and its intersection with material innovation. They are continually expanding their knowledge by identifying, assimilating and imagining the utility of emerging sciences, technologies and ideas. The specialist is an experienced project manager, capable of managing interdisciplinary virtual teams to deliver targeted advanced material innovations ready for commercialization in a 3-10 year timeframe. Ideally, you have 5 + years of experience in research and development of textile science and engineering from lab to scaled commercial production.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Textile Engineering/Technology, Textile Science, Textile Design, Industrial Engineering/Design, Material Science or related field.

A Master’s degree is preferred.

Minimum 5 years relevant work experience in lieu of Master’s degree; 3 years + Master’s degree.

Requires knowledge and hands-on experience in own discipline; Familiarity with the state-of-the-art technologies in textile engineering and manufacturing, yarns, and common post-production techniques, such as dyeing and finishing

Creative thinker with experience in presenting and pitching new ideas.

Ability to communicate effectively and work under tight timelines and with limited information

Curious approach with a “never stop learning” mindset

Strong interpersonal effectiveness, project management and data-based decision making (i.e. statistical methods) track record.

Ability to work with a moderate level of guidance and direction and effectively elevate strategic concerns to senior management in a timely manner.

Ability to make decisions within guidelines and policies that impact own priorities and allocation of time to meet deadlines.

Self-motivated and driven to exceed expectations.

Strong team orientation and ability to collaborate

Experience in the capture of intellectual property as patents for materials, products and/or processes.

WHAT YOU’LL WORK ON

As a Materials Data Innovator who is experienced in the identification, evaluation and manufacture of innovative, advanced materials, you will be responsible for driving programs and projects leading to the identification and assessment of innovative materials which, when taken to scale, can be used successfully at Nike.  

This role is responsible for upholding company ideals of: product performance and integrity, low environmental impact, closed loop materials and profitability.

Inventive with a desire to capture meaningful and relevant intellectual property for Nike.


Textile Engineering Expertise:

Interpreting performance factors into an engineered textile structure.

Model and engineer multiple structures and realize the overall desired system of performance.

Fabric creation methods and technologies such as knitting, weaving or non-woven.

Technology modification to generate unique structures.

Yarn properties and their effect on resulting textile structures.

Inform prototype creation on lab-scale / pilot machines.

Textile test methods and performance criteria. (Consumer products / our field preferred)

Work with material laboratories and companies that can provide testing solutions in this space

Innovate large scale commercial textile manufacture and the subsequent post-production processes.
