Project Goals

•    To list and document all PLCs used across the plant, including vendor, model, firmware, and software versions.
•    To check and verify backup availability for each PLC program.
•    To identify obsolete or near end-of-life PLCs and recommend suitable replacements.
•    To evaluate communication networks between PLCs and SCADA/HMI systems for reliability and cybersecurity.
•    To propose a long-term modernization and migration roadmap for PLC systems.

Why Choose This Project?

Industrial plants rely heavily on PLC systems for automation and safe operation. Over time, many PLCs become obsolete, backups are often not maintained, and communication structures may become unreliable. This creates significant risks in terms of downtime, safety, and future upgrades. By performing a structured assessment, the company can secure its automation assets, plan cost-effective upgrades, and reduce operational risks. For the student, this project provides valuable exposure to industrial automation systems, lifecycle management, and strategic planning—key competencies in Industry 4.0

•    Technical skills: PLC hardware/software knowledge, program backup handling, communication protocols (Profibus, Profinet, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, etc.).
•    Analytical skills: Obsolescence analysis, lifecycle management, risk prioritization.
•    Industrial knowledge: Understanding of automation architectures, SCADA integration, cybersecurity considerations.
•    Software competencies: PLC programming tools (Siemens TIA Portal, RSLogix/Studio 5000, Schneider Unity/Control Expert, etc.), documentation tools (Excel).
•    Soft skills: Documentation, technical reporting, communication with maintenance and automation teams, strategic planning.
