Job Description

As leaders of the Oregon workers’ comp marketplace, we at SAIF need to know a great deal about our competitors. The successful candidate will be, or become, the expert in Oregon’s workers’ comp marketplace and understand how various lines of insurance affect a mono-line carrier. They will want to know why a new competitor is making a presence in the market or the impact of introducing a new product, and more importantly, they are willing to research for the answers. If you’re a fearless explorer when it comes to workers’ comp market research, trends, and competition, we encourage you to delve deeper into this job opportunity.

In this role you will follow what’s going on in our workers’ comp marketplace and its competitive environment. You’ll obtain data, track trends, analyze SAIF’s gains and losses, and seek product and service opportunities and other constructive information. You’ll use that information to educate other members of the SAIF team, including SAIF’s executive team, make recommendations, and help develop new products, processes, and marketing plans.

You will also form relationships with SAIF association partners and will partner with them on the workers’ comp products developed for their members. Collaboration with virtually every department at SAIF will also be a regular part of the job.

Among other things, this job requires outstanding Excel, research, and analysis skills, along with a solid understanding of the workers’ comp marketplace. Overall, you need to be very personable and excellent at developing relationships. You’ll need at least eight  years of experience in an insurance environment — though it doesn’t have to be in workers’ comp.

Responsibilities

Analyze marketplace conditions, the competitive environment, and SAIF marketing results to identify market trends and issues, service and pricing opportunities, and factors contributing to carrier selection. Advise and make recommendations and areas for competitive improvement based on research. Develop, interpret, summarize, and report findings, with recommendations, to executive management.

Develop and conduct data analysis, predictive modeling, and data mining to provide recommendations in support of SAIF’s competitive placement in the market.

Develop and maintain business partnerships with key internal and external customers, including independent agents and industry associations endorsing SAIF as their workers’ compensation carrier.

Evaluate new association endorsement opportunities to determine if they align with SAIF’s mission and business objectives. Participate in the evaluation, development, modification, and implementation of SAIF’s group insurance products and services. Participate in product pricing decisions and assist with developing regulatory filings.

Assist in developing sales, marketing, and operational plans providing technical input to project teams for workers’ comp market issues.

Educate and train internal and external business partners on SAIF's new and existing products and services, SAIF’s group programs, and the competitive marketplace.

Support agent sales activities by assisting in identifying prospects from various sources.

Facilitate internal and external agent marketing activities by providing comparative information for competitors' products, services, pricing, and plans. Consult with Marketing, Sales and Communication staff in developing strategies to retain policyholders and gain competitive advantage in the market.

Serve as a technical resource for Oregon workers’ comp market issues.

Limited travel required for on-going training and company events. Depending on location this can be up to 20 days per year.

This position requires driving a SAIF vehicle or personal vehicle on behalf of SAIF. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in their state of residence along with an acceptable driving record according to SAIF’s policy.

Explore diverse perspectives and consistently behave sensitively toward differences in cultural norms, expectations, and ways of communicating. Work effectively with others who have different perspectives, backgrounds, and/or work styles.

The following qualifications are recommended:

Eight or more years of experience in an insurance environment with a focus on the competitive market either through sales, marketing, or agency relationships.

Strong experience working with Excel, databases, analysis, and reporting tools with demonstrated ability to draw conclusions from data and recommend actions.

A bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, or related field.

A professional designation such as CPCU (Certified Property Casualty Underwriter) or ARM (Associate in Risk Management) is desired.
