Based at our Luton manufacturing plant you’ll do just that. Established in 1993, GKN Aerospace in Luton is a world leader in commercial and military ice protection systems and transparencies. Offering a full range of capabilities; design, analysis, testing, certification and manufacture of electro-thermal ice protection, military fast jet canopies and flight deck windows to over 20 programmes including: Boeing 787 Dreamliner, AW101, Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed Martin, F-22 Raptor. Our customers include Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, Bell Helicopters, Textron, BAE Systems, Pratt & Whitney, Leonardo. Our Luton site is home to 370+ employees and onsite facilities including onsite parking, food hub and vending machines.
We are seeking an early-career Manufacturing Engineer professional, looking to grow as a member of the Manufacturing Engineering Team. Reporting to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, you’ll be working across Civil and Defence business lines based at our Luton site, occasional travel to visit equipment suppliers may be required. The Manufacturing Engineer will work on several value streams within transparencies current programmes developing new and existing manufacturing processes whilst supporting the day-to-day operations team at Luton.
This is an idea opportunity for someone at the start of their career journey in manufacturing engineering, an entry-level role with training and development opportunities.
Core operational hours at our Luton site are: 07:30 - 16:30 Monday to Thursday & 07:30 - 12:30 Friday.
• Develop & Document Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Process Specifications for manufacturing processes.
• Publish and update engineering documentation and manage introduction activities.
• Lead structured problem solving projects.
• Establish appropriate new process controls, improve existing ones.
• Day-to-day support to manufacturing operations.
• Conduct Material Review Board (MRB) reviewing and answering product faults.
• Reduce scrap & rework, supporting continuous improvement activities.
• Comply with the Company’s Environmental, Health & Safety and Energy procedures.
You’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes.
Essential:
• HNC with industry experience in Manufacturing Engineering or degree qualification in relevant engineering field.
• Working knowledge of MS Office suite.
• Ability to describe mechanical assembly processes from drawing / BoM.
• Exposure to standardisation of processes via SoPs (standard operations procedures).
• Logical and methodical approach to task planning and be able to demonstrate an evidence-based approach to decision making and problem solving.
• Competent in problem-solving, e.g. A3, 8D, 5 Why’s root cause analysis, Fishbone (Cause and Effect) Diagrams.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills, able to create clear, concise and accurate technical content.
• Able to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Desirable:
• Interpreting specifications.
• APQP and PPAP documentation including Process Flow Diagram, Process Failure Mode Effect Analysis, Process Control Plans, Measurement System Analysis and Process Capability.
• Lay-up processes for composite materials & adhesives.
• Coshh controls exposure.
